That is pretty easy. If your Saturn is an SL1 it is single cam if it is an SL2 it is dual cam. That is the only difference between an SL1 and an SL2 - Saturn didn't even bother to put a tag or emblem anywhere on the body to differentiate between the the two models. The 8th digit in the VIN will confirm this for you. If the 8th digit is "7" it is a Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) engine. If the 8th digit is a "9" then it is a Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) engine. When you have seen both engines, it is pretty obvious by simply looking at them. The DOHC cam cover is much wider and has 2 "humps" with spark plugs and wires going down the center between the humps. The SOHC cam cover is narrow and the plugs and wires go down one side.

Also in the 1992 model year, the DOHC engine was equipped with Multiport Fuel Injection. (MFI) The fuel injectors (4 of them) were located in the top of the intake manifold. The SOHC engine had Throttle Body Injection (TBI) The two injectors were located in the throttle body.

I don't have any pictures of the cam covers, but I have pictures of the cam cover gaskets (AKA Valve Cover Gaskets) you can very easilly see the difference.

When you go to get the engine they will ask for the #8 digit of the vin #. this is the # for the engine.

Does my 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix 2 door SE have a timing belt or chain?

that's easy but no VIN told that tells what engine is there.
two V6's
cam timing,
3.1L and 3.4L
(3.1L pure chain and push rod valve.)
in the block cam
then
3.4L is LQ1 , RPO code engine Twin Dual Cam
1996 ,= engine an interference design (never ignore the belted cams.
this engine is both chain and belt, LQ1
so learn what is under the hood or read the RPO
and tell what you own
or in the case if LQ1, google it and read all day long

Still having issues with my 04 PT Cruiser, 5 SPEED MANUAL. I replaced, both, the cam and crank position sensors and still randomly dies on me and have to wait at least a minute before it starts.

The best way to find the problem would be to hook up a 8 cannel lab scope to main sensors , power supply & ground's an drive the vehicle or let it sit running to see what is dropping out . Buying an replacing parts isn't the proper way to fix this type problem .

Read that these cars are famous for the ECM units gong bad. Also learned that these ECM's are different for automatic and manual cars ??????
Reading isn't the way either , testing the proper way is . Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop . Do you like making part stores rich ? They love guy's like you .

I have a 2007 ford freestyle and had a diagnostic run and the code p014b came up amd the dealer said tgey have never seen that code. So what does it mean

Scary when the dealer doesn't know.
Code P0014 means there is a problem with the cam timing for either cam B on bank one, or the cam on bank two. It depends on which engine you have.
Bank one is the cylinder head with cylinder one, and bank two is the other head.
You would need to look up the code in a shop manual to know for sure which cam is involved and get the test procedure.
The cam sensor involved is telling the engine computer the cam is not in the place it should be regarding valve timing.

2003ford explore jumped timing 4.6 v8

Could be a "Cam Phaser" problem. Look up this subject for your vehicle for extensive information.

If your engine is a dual cam engine, the timing mechanisms were problematic. Each side of the engine has 1 mechanism and they can be changed independently. Even a shortcut repair is expensive.

To sum it up, the shortcut method works quite well, but takes a special tool which may not be available for loan from the major autoparts stores.
Skill is involved in using this tool.

The Phasar is an automatic adjuster for each timing chain. It is possible that the chain did NOT jump, but that the Phaser stuck. Visual inspection is the only way to tell which side.

In general, if the engine makes noise like a diesel and the noise goes away above 2000rpm, it is a bad phaser.

was the timing belt broken?

Are you sure the cams are aligned correctly?

If the belt was broken It may be wise to do a compression test. This should tell you if a valve has bent.

Cutting out while driving and now engine light is on. throwing PH0012 cam timing retarded.

The cam may have jumped time, or possibly a cam sensor has gone out. I would get it checked before I drove it anymore. This type of problem can get worse real fast.
