The electric motors on the column are definitely a problem with these vehicles. The warranty coverage on these was extended and it wouldn't hurt to give your local gm dealer a call to see if you are still covered.
If they determine that you are not covered the repair isn't that costly. The motor will run you about $150 - $250 dollars and the labor will be about an hour or so to replace.
The motors are actually pretty easy to replace. They are held in with 2 bolts and take about 20 minutes to replace.

10187 SPECIAL COVERAGE
Same problem...I took my Ion to Meineke and they told me about this "Special Coverage Adjustment." It's not an official recall but it cover certain VINs from 2004-2007 Ions. Your vehivle has to have less than 100,000 miles on it and GM will replace your power steering assist motor free of charge. YOU MUST check with the dealer prior for eligibility prior to bringing in youyr car. Also, there is a special provision for reimbursement under section 6.1.12 of the GM Service Policy and Procedures Manual.
