97 cavalier with dohc 2.4. Daughter probably redlined it while stuck in snowdrift. Now it seems to run on 3 cyl-looks like #1 cyl isn't working the way the plug looks, but has about 120 lb compression in 3 cyl, and 150lb in the #3 cyl. Spark to all 4 plugs. And fuel getting to all 4. A definate problem with 1 cyl at the exhaust pipe where you can hear a dead cyl. But with everything working-spark and fuel, and compression, Why would it be dead in 1? Thanks for any help. Have not had it scanned.
Hi, how do you know you are getting fuel to all cylinders? Is the #1 plug wet with fuel? You would have to pull up the fuel rail to be sure. Could it be a bad injector solenoid or clog?Hi, how do you know you are getting fuel to all cylinders? Is the #1 plug wet with fuel? You would have to pull up the fuel rail to be sure. Forgot to add something- when I rev the engine, it goes to 4000 rpm, then totally cuts out and drops back to 3500 or so, then goes back to 400, and cuts out again. Does this shed any light on it ?Forgot to add something- when I rev the engine, it goes to 4000 rpm, then totally cuts out and drops back to 3500 or so, then goes back to 400, and cuts out again. Hello deniseF37: My name is Roger and I will help you. The fire order for a 2.2 cavalier is 1-3-4-2. The coil placement is enclosed. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer. This way I know it was helpful. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger
First thing you can do to eliminate a possible cause is trade the coil packs between 1&4, and 2&3. Check again and if 1&4 are now dead, then you replace the bad coil pack.
You stated that the plugs were wet, but didn't say from what. What did the plugs smell like? Oil, fuel, or coolant?
Please let me know what was on those plugs, as there could be other causes as well.
it sounds like you may have the wires on the wrong coil. It should be #1 on the #4 coil, and the #3 wire on the #2 coil. you probably have them backwards so 1 and 3 are firing on the exhaust stroke. the firing order is 1-3-4-2. they should be hooked like this.
