Sound like you have faulty low coolant level sensor in the coolant expansion tank.make sure coolant expansion tank has coolant should be on full hot mark when engine hot been driven.cold engine coolant level in expansion tank should be on full cold mark.

Its not the expansion tank you need to look at. Open the radiator cap when the engine is cold. Coolant should be right at the top. Was all the air bled from the system when these components were replaced? If the system has air in it, it will not effectively cool. Was the thermostat installed correctly? ( Put in backwards ). Electric rad fan? Is it operational?

Coolent light has come up on dashboard.what does it mean.

not that familiar with bmw's to know if you have a separate coolant LEVEL light as well as a temp light. so, if you have both then it is a level sensor tell you your coolant is low. add a mixture of 50/50 antifreeze(you can but this at most any auto store) to you coolant overflow tank. run engine until it is warm and then let it cool off. *** it cools it will draw coolant back into the radiator until it is may take more than once to get it full. when you are full you should have about 1/4 of the overflow filled when the engine is cold. If you do NOT have the second light then it is telling you the engine is starting to overheat, which is for the same reason just more critical. do the same thing but make sure you do not have a busted hose or other leak, and that your engine is not putting out white smoke. if either of these then let me know. otherwise it is probably just evaporated over time.

Ck engine light come on had it ck show code 128

P0128 is a temperature error code indicating: ECT Sensor Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature

Possible causes are:

  1. Check the operation of the thermostat (it may be stuck open)
  2. Coolant level is too low, or the coolant mixture is incorrect
  3. ECT sensor signal circuit has a high resistance condition
  4. ECT sensor is damaged or it has failed
In most cases, assuming the coolant level is full, changing the thermostat will correct your problem.
Thank you for using Fixya!

What kind of antifreeze should i use

you need to use vw/audi coolant. Go to either a Volkswagen or Audi dealership. IT's not cheap and comes as a concentrate (dilute 50/50), but you run the risk of growing cottage-cheese-like clumps in your cooling system if you mix a different type of coolant.

Overheating...temp gauge goes completely to the top&heating coolant light comes on...,no can i tell if it's the thermostat or the water pump??

Check the belt at the water pump to make sure that everything is tight and rotating properly. Usually if a water pump goes bad it will start leaking out of the weep hole. Make sure that your fluid is full and that the mixture is correct (50/50). If fluids are good, belt is tight, your thermostat is probably stuck closed. If the temp outside is below freezing and you have too much water in the system, it may have froze up.

What type of coolant to put in

50/50 antifreeze and water. pontiac or GM recommends the use of Dex cool antifreeze but it really doesnt matter. You have to check the color of the coolant orange you need to use extended life, if its green just use regular 50/50

1997 polo overheats even after removing thermostat

On a water cooled engine... the impeller on the water pump is no longer working correctly. It has probably come loose from the input shaft and is no longer pumping water. You can prove this on a warm engine by filling the radiator to the top and then accelerating / decelerating the engine... if you don't get a change in the water level the water pump is shot.
