If you have the 4.0 engine the "shift solenoid" is for overdrive and also one for tcc ingagement. There is however a govenor pressure solenoid and sensor that will affect shifting. If you have a v-8 engine then you have a solenoid block that contains all 6 solenoids for the transmission in one package and is mounted on the top of valve body inside the transmission. If you can tell me what the diagnostic codes and symptoms are I may can help you fix it without buying expensive parts you dont need.

Hi Eric, it sound to me like the modulator in the trans is faulty. This modulator is what controls the shifting in the trans. It details a 30 minmute repair by your transmission specialist. The replacement part should be around a hundred dls, plus the labor. While you are at it, have the filter changed in the trans for carefree shifting.

Is the 4x4 trans on a grand cherokee differnt than the 4x4 trans on just a cherokee. Years 1994-2000

Grand Cherokee many times will have a Chrysler trans (depends on engine) "regular" Cherokee usually has an AW4 unit. The difference is obvious as Chrysler one is larger and has the reverse switch located above the left rear corner of the pan...AW4 has it on the passenger side directly across from where the shift lever is on the drivers side.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee shifting problem from 2nd to 3rd

Check the kick down cable. If it sticks the transmission won't shift. I sprayed WD-40 on both the top and bottom connectors , and it worked like a charm. It's alot cheaper them spending 2000 on a new transmission you don't really need.

Sounds like third gear is gone, You will have to see a dealer or trans shop for that on.

Check the Trans fluid level with it running and at operating temperature. Jeep NAG1 transmissions are known to have the input electric seal leak trans fluid. Not an exspensive fix add Mopar ATF4 and then relace the guild seal.

Shift cable

you will have to tear apart the center console to gain access to the shifter and cable assy, then you will have to get under the rig to unhook it from the trans, pay attention to what gear it is in and the location and routing of the cable, have fun!
