Caution!!! Removing the driveshaft yoke retaining nut could cause misalignment of the ring and pinion gears and lead to more serious problems. If you are wanting to access the pinion bearing because your 8.8 rear end has started making noise then you really need to disassemble the unit as a whole. A job left in most cases to an expert.

On my 2004 mercury mountaineer if anyone knows what size socket fits the rear axle nut let me know I have been told a 36 mm but it seems like it's a little too big for the nut

36mm is the consensus of opinion, but in reality, it is the socket that 'FITS'! Most socket sets come in metric and imperial, you use that one that is the best fit.

How do i release the tether holding the spare tire

There is a lug wrench in the rear acess panel that holds the jack and wrench. Depending on your van, either lift up on the cargo bin door in the rear and you will see a hex shaped nut or in the 2nd row seats there is a little circle that is cut out of the carpet with the same hex shaped nut. Use the lug wrench and turn the nut counterclockwise to lower the spare tire.

1993 F150 4x4 w/ auto locking hubs - rotor removal

There are some special 4 tooth and hex sockets for removing the nuts inside the hubs of the truck.
YOu can find these at NAPA or maybe AutoZone or Advance. I would go to NAPA because they more than likely have it and also know something about repairing this assembly.
Ford uses Dana front end parts and NAPA has original Dana parts in stock... so it is as good as or better than original and they would have the tool for it.
Be careful and follow the procedure exactly for putting the front hubs back together.
YOU CAN RUIN THE FRONT END OF THE TRUCK IF YOU DO NOT PERFORM THIS SERVICE CORRECTLY.
And trust me... many of the idiots working in repair garages do not know how to do these older 4x4 hubs either... ask someone and read the books for the right procedure... some of the older mechanics may show you how to do it. Ask

How do you adjust the parking brake on a 93 ford ranger , it currently does not hold the vehicle properly

Should be adjustments at the ends of your emergency cables that run along your the bottom of your truck frame . at the ends around the differential . loosen the nut and give it a few turns equally on both sides if theres two adjustments.
