Deterioration of the clearcoat can be caused from several things, not the least of which is the environment, such as acid rain or air polution. Usually it is caused from lack of maintenance, such as not using a protective wax or polish regularly. I have seen instances where too much polishing with a power buffer caused the clearcoat to wear away. Or it could just be a poor factory paint job. Lots of those around. Shop around for a good price on repaint. Where I am from, there is a paint and body business call MAACO that will repaint a car very cheaply. Their paint jobs don't last more than a couple of years, but they look really good when fresh. You may find someone who paints cars as a hobby, or second income. They usually do decent work for little profit. Check the want ads and local bulletin boards. You may be surprised at how affordable a new paint job can be.
