Hi, My Sidekick starts to "putter" as i drive like it's not getting enough fuel. Then when I accelerate it blows large amounts of white smoke out the exhaust. It did this once before last summer and I just could not accelerate and get going. When my husband looked under the hood he found a loose spark plug (?) When he reattached everything it worked just fine. Then during the winter months I thought the white smoke was just from the cold but then it started to do this puttering thing again and obviously blowing alot of smoke. My husband checked the spark plug again and made sure it was in place. I had an oil change about a week ago and they said it was leaking oil but didn't say anything else about it. Any help would be great. Thanks

Get a mechanic to check the head on the engine. White smoke means coolant is getting in to engine cylinders.

White smoke always means that oil is getting into the cylinder. This will make the car sputter. You have to find out why the oil is getting in there. It needs to go to a mechanic because it could be any number of reasons why the oil is getting in.

The black smoke is unburnt diesel fuel- lift your foot. When I was learning to drive diesel trucks (many years ago, in one of these trucks) I was taught that when going up hill under load, I should lift off the accelerator until it just starts to die off, then give it a little bit just to hold revs. No more black smoke.

When you start it, do you let the glow plugs heat for long enough? (Does it have them? I can't remember).

I would have the fuel pump tested by performing a fuel pressure test. You may have a fuel pump that is getting weak. When was the last time your car was tuned up? I would start by testing the fuel pump.

I would start with checking the fuel pressure, which should be around 15psi for carb and 30psi for EFI. Has the fuel filter been replaced?

not sure the gas had much to do with it. sounds like a blown head gasket. what is the colour of the oil. gray often indicates fluids have leaked into it. white smoke out the tailpipe generally indicates a blown head gasket as well.

We have the same problem we changed the fuel pump and it fix the problem for about a week, the van started puttering and didn't start until the 20th try. Now we are looking at the fuel filter. What a way to spend the 4th.

'95 Honda Civic EX will not start after cleaning fuel injectors
I would talk to who cleaned the injectors, I don't know if it something they did or not. It could be a stuck open injector. The exhaust would have a raw fuel odor if it was. What it sounds like is a blown headgasket, which can just happen. The exhaust would have a sweet smell to it. Usually starts as a small leak (between cyl. 2 & 3), the engine burns the coolant while driving which you don't see. Then the coolant level gradually drops to a point where the car overheats, which warps the head, causing a large leak. Now you see the coolant burning (white smoke).

Check for free play on distrubtor.
If you has a known good disturbutor then do the swap.

===== Lite white smoke during warm up is OK.
If the white smoke is still noticable after 15 minutes of start up then you should start monitor the coolant level and oil level.
If the temp. is raising then it can be stage one of blown headgasket.

Keep track of the temp. and make sure the oil is not getting a white/creamy texture.
DO NOT drive it if it's overheating.
