I have a freelander td4 2003, its auxillary belt has just failed and also taken out the second belt. The garage are changing the belt, tensioner & pulley on the main Aux belt, but are also advising that the same components are changed on the secondary belt. this seems like overkill, is it normal practice to change these components when a belt is changed? Thanks

Modern multi rib belts rarely break and last a very long time. A broken belt indicates a severe lack of maintenance or the failure of an associated component.

It is the policy of many repairers to routinely replace failure related parts. There are several reasons for this even though it is claimed to be the only way to provide a reliable and guaranteed quality repair to ensure customer satisfaction. That is a small part of the reason though most of the reason means quicker repairs and higher profits from fewer and/or less qualified and/or experienced staff while shifting the liability for any subsequent warranty work to the manufacturer.

I have never entirely agreed with that approach. While someone who depends on a vehicle for work and covers a high mileage will demand a high degree of reliability and will expect to pay for it, that type of person will almost invariably have a late model car that is most unlikely to be a Freelander.
I believe a repairer should work for and in the best interests of the customer by matching the repair to the means and requirements of that individual rather than slavishly following a policy.

I believe a motor engineer should be able to examine the surrounding components and assess the condition and to completely justify every replacement and carry out any necessary maintenance as part of the repair and still be able to guarantee the finished work. As far as I am concerned repairing vehicles is incidental to the repairer's primary purpose - that of solving vehicle related problems for people.

I suggest you choose your repairers more carefully in future...

Belts do fail and if a second belt was damaged by the first failure , it would make sense to replace both belts at the same time
better now that again in the near future when it will most likely be at the most inconvenient time you could imagine

SOURCE: changing alternator belt on freelander

you will need a long thin wrench and the front bracket that is attached to the front of the engine.(the front of the engine is actuall facing right.) It is not the easiest thing to do. The whole front motor mount and bracket need to be loosened to slip the belt over it. It is a strange design with no getting around doing it. Not really for the amatuer mechanic so Id recommend a shop to do it. They shouldnt charge any more than an hour labor plus the part.

How to change land rover freelander fan belt

You have to jack it up and remove the underboady engine cover. Lower the vehcile and open the hood remove the engine cover. Use the jack to support the engine for underneath. you'll need to remove or swing the top passenger side engine mount. back off the tensioner from the belt. Auto Zone, Advanced Auto rents a tool if needed. Now you can change your belt!

Noise coming from front of engine changed auxillary belt and tensioner noise went but came back after a week

you may have a belt that is not correctly tightened, the weather has changed and you hear more and more belts squealing. check tension on your belts it could be too tight or loose, but if you replaced the other things you mentioned I suspect either water pump or other pulley or just the tension on the belts..

I wonder if my freelanyder really needs a new timeing belt at 70,000 miles? rfs

It may not need a belt - most often the belt tensioner is what fails, rather than the belt. But you wouldn't want to put a 70k mile belt back on the engine after going in and doing all that work (or paying for all that work to be done). And further, maybe the tensioner is OK too...but are you willing to risk a $4000 engine swap if you're wrong? Do the service.

Freelander w reg. 1.8 petrol, 64,000 miles on clock. when do I need to change the timing belt

If you are asking about the actual TIMING BELT and not the serpentine belt, I would check with a dealership or a local garage. The Freelander has three (3), yes--3 timing belts:

front timing belt

left side rear timing belt

right side rear timing belt

Hope this helps!
