There's a TSB published by ford for this condition. It's caused by a binding shifter button.

  • KEY STUCK IN IGNITION / SHIFTER BINDING CONDITION
Publication Date: July 6, 2007
FORD: 2006-2007 Fusion LINCOLN: 2006 Zephyr MERCURY: 2006-2007 Milan
This article supersedes TSB 07-2-1 to update the Part List. ISSUE: Some 2006-2007 Fusion, Milan and 2006 Zephyr vehicles built before 9/4/2006 may exhibit a customer concern of the ignition key getting trapped or a shifter slider binding condition. Most of the key trapped conditions are caused due to a binding shifter button which does not allow the pawl to contact the park detect switch.
ACTION: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE If the key will not release from the ignition cylinder lock follow the Key Trapped procedure. On vehicles with a hard-to-shift shift lever into park or slider bunching/binding then follow the Shifter Slider Binding procedure. Key Trapped:
  1. Actuate knob button 5-10 times, observe for binding or sticky condition.
  2. Replace knob assembly if the knob sticks following Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-05. NOTE: WHEN REPLACING THE SHIFT KNOB DO NOT REUSE THE SCREWS. REMOVE AND DISCARD THE SCREWS. INSTALL TWO NEW SCREWS AND TIGHTEN TO 18 LB-IN (2 N-m). DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SCREWS OR DAMAGE MAY OCCUR.
Shifter Slider Binding:
  1. If shifter slider is bunched up or binding, replace bezel assembly following WSM, Section 307-05. NOTE: WHEN REPLACING THE BEZEL, CARE NEEDS TO BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK OVERRIDE TAB IS PROPERLY ALIGNED INTO ITS GUIDE. REFER TO FIGURE 1.

Key stuck in ignition when car is in park

Turn ignition on. Put you foot on the brake and rack through the gears to Drive and then back to Park. Ignition Off and remove the key. It has worked for me three times. The first time, I phoned the dealership and that was their advice which worked.

The charging light will be a separate issue.

First the battery is drained. This will cause the clicking sound and possibly the shifter not releasing, if the voltage is low enough. The pop noise, not really sure about. Could be a fuse that popped. But a bad fuse wouldn't cause the starter to click. It would turn the engine or you would have nothing.

The check charging light should be on if the engine is not running.
The most common cause is a bad chip in the key. Have you tried a spare key ?

Mercury milan will not move out of park

Is this with the gearshifter in the car? In other words can you physically move the gear shifter out of park or is that the part that's stuck?

2006 Mercury Milan, I took our for a drive the other day. When I got home, the key wouldn't come out of the ignition. This is the second time this has happened in less than a year. I called the Service...

Mercury won't recall it because it's a low % of failures. You might have seen others with the same issue but the # of complaints vs # of sales dictates a recall. To help possibly solve the issue is to get "powdered graphite" like used in frozen door locks and give a couple of "spurts" in ignition switch. MAKE SURE IT'S POWDERED GRAPHITE and not liquid. You can get small tube at a parts store or any good locksmith.

Key stuck in ignition

If it will not pull out in the ignition lock position, remove the trim from around the ignition cylinder, and remove the shifter linkage that connects to the ignition (don't remove the transponder ring). This is a common problem on all cars. That part wears out all the time. You don't need to buy a new one, just leave it off. (by the way, I'm a master locksmith in denver)
