Transmission may not shift at the right speeds or has a hard time shifting into gear. Sometimes the needle may jump or **** at cruising speed or may not work at all. May cause the service engine light to come on. Can also affect the fuel usage because the shifting points are affected.

Car speed?
or ABS speed sensors. we cant guess, whats wrong, can we.?
USA car,? we are USA, cars not here are vastly different.
so........????????
why ask not telling problem? scans told you sensor is bad
post the DTC error. speedo dead.Odom, dead? what?
J20 engine ,
5 speed stick shift box. manual trans,,m/t
4wd or 2wd?
toss coin NOT ABS sensors.
there are 2 speed sensors ill do all 3 permutations of car
4wd one or tail of transfer case
2wd one on tail of 5speed box.
any, the backup speed sensor in the speedometer cluster
89-98 years and was deleted 1999, usa.
why ask ,tell why. so we can be on the same page and
not have to document all the above.
color is of on concern, only correct part numbers matter !!!
colour (non usa spelling)
is my only real useful HINT.
never said speedometer fails. or odometer fails
the trans is manual so no speed sensor needed ever there to shift automatially, its a stick
scan it yet.?
THAT BE FIRST.
i looked at our 1999 usa GV . serv. man
best i can tell speedo has new electronic head.
no speedo cable. first year, in fact. (i owned a 97 and 04)
so when VSS goes dead (say)
the speedo goes dead
odom goes dead
and ECU sets DTC errors for VSS dead.
3 clear symptoms.
some cars have different VSS1 to match, axle gears.
the vss gear on end .
on newer cars with stick shift
like mine now
the aBS sends speed to PCM
so there is no transmission speeds sensors at all , 6sp, m/t
so lacking symptoms, me bollixed.
the D lights blink for A/T failures
in the USA (are you) the first check is to scan it.
(and drive it checking for slip, flare or other symptoms)1st !!!
#2
connect the scan tool 0bd2 and scan it for tranny errors)
if you read the FSM , it shows each step in sensor tests.
and lots of not..... (scope readings missing, bad bad bad)
first off , you need some facts:
if the scan tool shows the rear (wild guess) speed sensor reads wrong, do not think its bad, you fail to realize most failures
are the transmission slips (trans, is bad) and the sensor see this illegal
low rpm and trips a DTC for that.
most those sensors last forever,
THe ECU (PCM) never knows what is wrong, it only knows
what tests fail,.
The ecu knows the speed of the engine and the tranny speeds.
this is the TCM function (be it in a TCM box or in the PCM)
this TCM does all the shifting and monitors for errors.
The DTCs in many case should state, tranny slip or bad sensor.
and dont.
you didnt post the DTCs so can elaborate.
working the A/T with no FSM. is not going to work.
you need to read the on car service, and do the steps in the correct order. fiddling a sensor with a tranny with low pump pressure. is folly
so is same and the stall test fail. (1st tests both)
my byline:
"the PCM is dumb. it never knows what part is failed, ever.!!!"
think of DTCs as only clues, or 1 more symptom....
Your description sounds like a condition called overactive ABS. the grinding nee is the abs pump engaging which will also cause the brake pedal to fade. What is happening is the abs system thinks a wheel is locking up at slow speed even though all the wheels are turning. The abs engages to correct the condition even though there is nothing to correct.
Some common failures that will cause this are a bad wheel speed sensor, incorrect wheel speed sensor gap, or a bad exciter ring.
The easiest way to figure this out is with a higher end multi-function scan tool capable of reading abs data. With all four wheel speeds displayed drive the vehicle to duplicate the symptom. When the symptom occurs you should be able to see what speed sensor is dropping out. You can then focus on that wheel by checking the common failures.
If you have any further questions i'll be happy to answer them.
There is no idle sensor on the 2000 Chevrolet Impala, according to my online resource.
But, there is the following that senses rpm of the engine and thus the idle speed when the Throttle Position Sensor is at 5% or the accelerator pedal is not depressed:
Crankshaft Position SensorOperation
Engine speed is a very important input to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Crankshaft speed and position are the basis for many calculations made by the computer. Crankshaft position values are transmitted to the computer by pickup coils also known as Permanent Magnet (P/M) generators, Hall Effect sensors or optical sensors. The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) also known as engine speed sensor is typically located in proximity to the crankshaft.
In addition, the PCM uses the CKP sensor in conjunction with the camshaft position sensor to calculate and perform misfire diagnostics. Related Symptoms
A No Start / Intermittent Start condition - Can be caused by a faulty crankshaft position sensor due to loose connections, bad grounds, high resistance in the circuit, or opens in the circuit.
Engine Misfire Diagnostic Trouble Codes
NOTE: Engine Mechanical conditions can also create the same or similar symptoms. (Don't overlook basic mechanical integrity).
sensors, such as the camshaft sensor, to monitor rotational speeds and assist the on-board computer. When the camshaft sensor malfunctions, it can affect the vehicle's performance, from engine speed to fuel economy. The camshaft sensor is an integral part of the engine's operating system, and losing its functionality can be the tip of the iceberg for greater engine failure. Knowing the symptoms of a bad camshaft sensor can help a mechanic navigate the often complex systems of ignition and engine performance. A common symptom of a faulty fuel pressure regulator is a drastic decrease in fuel economy.
