Hi Robin. It may be a few things. If you don't know when things were changed on the car since you just bought it, I would have a tune up done on it and all the fluids flushed and filled. The spark plugs/coils may have never been changed on the car. If you have a bad wire or plug, it could kill the car. It may be a map sensor. Usually when they are bad or going out, they can go five miles and they will die. Then they can go thirty miles before they die. It always starts back up though. Since you came to a stop when it dies, you might need to change the air filter and the fuel filter. Check all of your fuses. One may be blown. Check your hoses for a vacuum leak as well. Robin, don't hesitate to ask me a question. I am here to help as much as I can. Just write me back if you need something. Thanks Robin.
Engine stall or RPM fluctuates
at idle.
This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control
