Question about Saturn SL1

2 Answers

Hi, my 93 Saturn SL 1 wont start...I had this problem 6 months ago and after tinkering with it a bit...it started and was fine until last week. It wont start at all, my battery is strong, lights come on and I have had my starter checked and it is just fine. Somebody mentioned to me that it could be my starter relay switch?

I assume from your question that the engine is not cranking over. It definitely could be your starter relay switch, but it could also be your neutral safety switch. With the key on, try shifting back and forth through all your gears a few time, then try again to start it. If it starts after that, it is your neutral safety switch.

Thanks so much--- we did indeed try that to no avail. Called auto parts store and they recommend i buy one because that is most likely my problem...but I doubt it because it still wont start. Do you know how to test the starter relay? or do I even have one of those?

Yes, or check that the battery cables are not too corroded.

from the comment of jcfs259, you can test the starter relay switch by taking it off of the vehicle and use a multi meter to check for continuity to groung thru this various pins, try to get a diagram for the switch so you can try to test it with some battery out of the car.

Could be starter, battery, battery cables, security key system module going bad, etc.
Check easiest things first. Battery condition and age, condition of cables, and connections at starter.

First of all. We have put 2 new starters on this car recently. We thought the first might have been a fluke. However we had the 2nd checked and it tested fine as did the battery and alternator. Problem is...

what do you mean by wont start?? engine cranks but wont run? engine wont crank? Is the anti-theft light flashing? is the car in park? did you put it in Neutral and try to crank it?

Voltage drop testing the starter electrical circuit would be a good first step , ruling out the cable's connections an ground !
Starter Voltage Drop If this doesn't find a problem ,then check the control side . Ignition switch , when it won't start check for Battery voltage at the connection at the starter solenoid "S" terminal .
