Unless you have a flushing machine you will not be able to empty the torque converter. If you have a 3 speed auto you are looking at 9 quarts total. If you have a 4 speed transmission you are looking at 10 half total.Be sure you check the fluid in neutral and not park.

Fill with 4 quarts then while engine is running continue to add little at a time until you read the fluid level on the dipstick in the normal operating range. Being a chrysler, the transmission fluid needs to be checked while engine is running and the vehicle in neutral. It will say for sure on the tranny dipstick.

You need 4 quarts with new filter, however, if you go to a shop you can change the entire fluid system with a machine. Remember, your only touching 1/3 of the fluid, nothing from the torq converter drains. If you want a complete absolute system drain get to a shop. They only drain so much.

Auto fluid was brown so when I drained it, only 2 litres came out, so put back 2 litres of fresh which came up to the hot mark on the dipstick. Fluid now still brown ( but not as dark as before.

Michael, If your vehicle is a normal automatic transmission it will have a torque converter. If you really want to attempt a complete flush, I will post links on how it is done, you will still have to change the filter to ensure a thorough job. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

first off it only gets out 1/3 of the fluid by hand.
you know that fact right? putting fresh atf over mostly old is a wasted effort. right, unless done 3 time in row>?

.i guess you lost the operators guided, or cant google search this?

a full flush and filter works best. any ASE shop can do it.

My 1987 jeep yj will not go in only has 51k miles and is auto. when i shift into neutral its sounds and moves like it wants to go in reverse,

True, but you also have to consider 51K and 25 years of service. I would try a transmission drain and refill with a new transmission filter, see if that helps. Flush the lines or replace them also.

What kind of gear oil is required for my 1992 jeep wrangler 5 speed transmission/transfer case and how many quarts will it require

Transmission generally takes a bit less than two quarts, Use 75/90 gear lube in that (in very cold climates you can add a small amount of automatic trans fluid to keep it flowing on cold starts) Transfer case takes a bit over one quart and takes dextron mercon 3. When filling either, fluid is full when on a level surface it begins to come out of the fill hole while filling. When changing either, always make sure you can open the fill plug before draining so you know you can replace what you removed.

Change transmission fluide in 1999 Jeep Cherokee

To change the transmission fluid you drop the transmission pan should be about 16 bolts. Once that is off you will see the filter. Buy the kit from a local auto parts store and look to see what the filter looks like. Check your transmission fluid once you drain to see metallic look in it if so i would suggest a transmission flush.

How much transmission fluid is required for a change?

Depending on what type of vehicle it can take as much as 16 to 18 quatrs of ATF , if you are completely flushing the unit. if you are just dropping the pan and draining it without flushing the torque converter then 12 qts. should be on the safe side, make sure you do not over fill or under fill the transmission, check level while trans is in nuetraul with parking brake set, wheels chalked. please rate my help , thanks

If you are dropping the pan be sure to install a new trans filter and pan gasket..

to have the unit professionally flushed by machine can cost as much as $ 200.00 with flush and filter change...

Need to change manual transmission fluid

pull the lower plug from the transmission, it will be on the bottom or the side on the bottom. replace the plug after draining and remove the fill plug wich is about half way up the side of the transmission. use 75w 90 gear oil in the trans.
good luck
