A new battery will read 12.6 volts with a volt meter accross the positive and negative posts - when you start the vehicle the voltage will increase to 13.5 to 15 volts - if you get the increased voltage, then the alternator is working - if you don't then it is not working - the new alternator could be faulty or the wiring could have an open somewhere

Check all your battery wires and the terminals. Make sure you have a good connection. It could be your alternator. Do this test. Make sure the battery is charged and start your car. Once started, take your hot side terminal off the battery. If it dies instantly, it is the alternator. If that don't check, write me back. I am here to help. Thank you for choosing FixYa.

I have a 84 d15 dodge. the battery won't hold a

Sounds as if you have a short draining the battery overnight. Take the battery negative off and run a 12volt test light between the terminal and the ground post on the battery. leave the key out of the ignition switch. see if there is a dim or bright light glowing in the test light. If either one is the case start pulling out your fuses and watching the light until the light goes out. When it goes out y have identified the circuit your short is in. ( headlamps, door switches, ect. ) Make sure to put each fuse back in the proper place so as not to burn anything up!!!!. By the way , you did NOT keep the positive battery terminal off to see if the alternator was charging did you? If you did you just burned up your new alternator, which by the way will give your battery a direct short to ground through the diode trio in the alternator, thus causing the battery to very quickly drain. and Why should you have to jump start a NEW battery? Check to see if you are lucky enough to have a charging fuse, if you did the positive off while running thing that fuse could save you if you have it.

I have a brand new battery in my 2000 Honda Civic & the car will not start now. The battery was installed 2 days ago & the car started just fine & ran fine, but then I didn't drive it for 2...

Check the function of the alternator. Charge the battery with a battery charger or jump start the engine. While the engine is running use a voltmeter to check the voltage at the battery posts. Red to + and black to -. You should have between 13.5 − 16 volts. If you do not the alternator is bad or the drive belt is loose. If the alternator checks ok then something is on that is drawing power from the battery and running it down. Check under hood, trunk, glove box, and interior lights. Can also be a brake light switch causing the brake lights to stay on. In rare cases it can also be a stuck relay such as a power window relay. From you description I think you will find the alternator is ok and your problem is something is on and running the battery down.
