In AWD you are free to run on all surfaces dry or otherwise. In 4x4 high or low ensure there is limited traction to allow slippage of the tires. If you run 4x4 high or low on dry pavement you may damage your driveline. AWD is great for mixed driving conditions but unlike the larger GMC vehicles with this option, the Envoy and TB are somewhat noisy and allow more slippage of the rear wheels before engaging the front resulting in a clunk at times.
