As far as the rear goes may be a u joint. have the fluid checked in the rear axle unt and while there down there with vehicle in neutral and the tires blocked grab hold of the drive shaft and try to move it up and down and side to side. if it moves around you have found your problem. as far as the front problem goes could be a number of things. the steering shaft that runs down from the steering wheel could be loose causing a rattle. you can check this by opening the hood and grabing where it comes out of the fire wall and see if it moves up and down. the stabilizer bushings could be worn. do you feel the rattle in you feet on the floor? a shock could be worn as well. hope this helps

The clunk sounds like it has a bad u-joint in the rear drive shaft. The rattle in the front may be a broken swaybar link.

That clunking noise you get it whilst you are braking or just as you are coming. If it is whilst on breaking, check your rear brakes. if is whilst coming check for any suspension shocks, bushes.

if the diff is not leaking oil there should be no reason to be low. If you hear a noise in neutral with the truck not moving, its not in the rear end. it may be the trans or transfer case.

if it is the pinion bearing located near the drive shaft it could cause slack and thump the drive shaft. with the truck jacked up the driveshaft would be sloppy near the rear up and down.

May seem to be unrelated but, I had a similar problem with my last truck and it wound up being ball joints. It sounds similar, (especially the rocking forward after stop), might be something to check. If you're talking about a 4WD, it could be your transfer case.

Rear end clunk in Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup

The noise is caused by the axle button being worn out, this lets the axle move back and forth and clunk, this is a unique problem with C clip retained axles, it is a noise issue but will not fail and cause any more damage, in order to fix it you must have the axles pulled and the diff carrier checked for excess wear where the axle retainning C clip rides, if the carrier is ok then replace the axles.

Clunk noise from rear of truck

How about the U joint? If it's shot, you will hear a clunk when u start up. You probably already know, but jack up the back of the truck (both wheels off the ground) make sure u blocked front wheels front and back so it can't roll, use jack stands so u don't get squished, truck in neutral, e- brake off, climb under, grab driveshaft and twist back and forth to see if there is slop or play in the rear universal joint. Let me know what u find. Good Luck, and don't get squished (or squashed). countrycurt0
