You can hear your power steering pump working and if it's whining, it may be low on fluid.
Check the fluid level with the engine running and be very careful of moving or rotating parts.
Locate the pump and check the level (the cap will usually have a dipstick to measure the level attached to the cap and you read it the same way as your engine oil dipstick). DO NOT overfill the pump as it will just leak out and cause other issues.
If the level is very low, top it up then work the steering from side to side a few times then recheck the level. Careful, power steering fluid can get very hot!!
If the fluid in the pump looks dark or black, take the vehicle to your local mechanic and have the fluid replaced and the system flushed.

Most common problem is low power steering fluid, if this does'nt help the power steering pump may be going bad, try adding fluid first

Sounds like the power steering pump. I would check for low fluid first. If it is full and still makes the noise then it needs to be replaced. Make sure if it is low that you only add POWER STEERING FLUID.

Could be power steering pump, if it only happens when turning wheel, go out to vehicle crank it up and just turn wheel to left all the way , then right all the way when it gets to the end left or right if it is whining that is your p/w steering pump that is bad.

SOURCE: My car is leaking power steering fluid and I am

You'll need to add some fluid and see where it leaks out. Its common for hoses to leak/blow.

There is a loud whining coming from the motor

Hi Tyler:
Try using a mechanics stethescope (or a dowel sound rod, thumb over end held against your ear) and with the engine running, touch various components. You will hear different sounds, and hopefully be able to isolate the whine.
CAUTION - Work Safe - moving bits can make the sound rod hurt you.
I'd be guessing at an alternator bearing as they whine worse than a puppy on the wrong side of a door.
Cheers

Why is there a grinding sound when turning? Power steering fluid is full

Grinding or whining? A lot of power steering pumps kinda whine when turning. How long has it been since you've changed the power steering fluid? Since 2000??? It looses it viscosity kinda like motor oil. I'd change it first, that's the cheapest and easiest thing to do

1999 ford explorer limited whining noise in front end

Whining noise is probably in one of the pulleys or belts. Probably the power steering. And the popping is probably CV axles.

I have a 2007 Nissan Altima. When turning right or left it makes a whinning sound and my steering wheel vibrates a bit as I turn. It will also whine when I have it in park. I'll let it warm up a bit and...

Check the belt tension before you do anything. Most of the time, this is the issue. Second could be just a badly worn belt. Simple and lest expensive things to start with.

Steering makes a whining noise - where is the fluid reservoir?

the suspect part for a power steering whine is the power steering pump, flush (very important) the system and replace the PS pump..
