Hello my...... You can change the oil yourself but I do not recommend it. If you have a Walmart nearby they will change it for you and change the filter for a few dollars. If you change it yourself you will have to pay more for the oil and the filter and you will have to discard of those 5 or 6 quarts of oil. Joe

No, Just do it yourself. Turn off your car and park. Remove the oil drain plug. Wait for about half hours then tighten drain plug and refill the oil. Done

No. The oil is very easy to change. All you need is a filter wrench and a 15 mm. socket, and a drain pan. Get under the truck and the oil filter is right there and the drain plug is in the oil pan. Drain the oil first, then remove the oil filter with the filter wrench. Take your finger and dip it in the oil and put a film of oil on the new oil filter gasket. Then install the new oil filter. Once you install the new oil filter, put the drain plug back in. Then put 5 quarts of new oil in the oil fill.

The oil pressure gauge was working yesterday. It's not leaking oil or burning it. The gauge isn't working now. Could i be low on oil or is something else wrong?

Good idea to check oil level first. Next, check that wire to oil pressure sender is still attached. Next, try hooking up know good mechnical gauge to insure you really have pressure. If all good, short wire to sender to ground--if gauge come up, replace sender.

I have an oil leak coming from what looks like above the oil filter.

That doesn,t make sense because the filter is on the engine (Block) Not near the oil pan, Take it to the dealer ship to get check out, that way you will not get a line of ****, From some mouth mechanic that could not change a bike cycle tire if they had to.

Black smoke from 2000 Avalon

I can change my oil every 3 decades and it'll be at regular intervals. What are your intervals? 3000 miles? 84 million Mississippi? One lap around Daytona Raceway?

Where do you see the black smoke and carbon coming from?

A mechanic that "forgot" to change the oil filter is not only a poor mechanic, but he/she is ripping you off. You need an oil filter with each oil change more than you need new oil. If I poured clean water through a dirty Brita filter, would you drink it?

There is no way to tell you exactly what's wrong over the internet (besides your mechanic). But, assuming the smoke and carbon you mentioned is coming from...

the HOOD: You either have an oil leak, or just a bunch of oil sitting on your engine burning off. Check oil with dipstick (something you should be doing at least once a week in a NEW car, let alone a 10year old model.) The leak could be poor workmanship by your mechanic, or something entirely different, too.

the EXHAUST PIPE: You may have blown your piston rings or have a stuck/bent valve.

Toyotas are somewhat known for running well beyond when they should. I blew out rings in my '93 pickup and drove it daily for 3 more months before it actually quit. I'm still not convinced it's dead.

Oil pressure gage fluctuates;red oil icon stays on; alarm bell keeps ringing. I added 2 qts of oil. no change.

Hello,I can help you with your buick oil pressure problem. This is the 3800 engine correct? Is engine noisey? Would be best to install a mechnical oil pressure gauge on your engine to see if you are actually losing oil pressure or we have another problem. this tells you exactly what the engine is doing. If you do not have one the cheapest thing to try is replacing the oil pressure sending unit.if sender is defective it will cause your problem. This sending unit is above the oil filter.

Oil engine light blinks on and off when the engine is idling. What can cause this?

This is an indication of low oil pressure. Either the oil level is too low and you need to add oil to the full line on the dip stick or you have a real oil pressure problem and need to have the problem diagnosed by a certified mechnic.
Let me know if you have any other comments or questions. Thanks.

oil sending units go out occasionaly and dont really mess anything up other than leaking oil on the ground just make sure you have the correct amount of oil in the motor and youll be fine. i just changed mine it quit working around 75,000 miles and i helped change my friends on his dodge he was around 87,000 miles. we both done this last year and no problems have come from it....
