The solution is simple and easy, if not cheap.
You have a defective upper motor mount. If you open the hood and look for the motor mount on the left hand side near the accessory belt, you will notice that the rubber has shrunk. THAT is the problem.
This will only make noise at idle at a stoplight and doesn't do it all the time.
I have a 1999 Saturn SL and have fixed this problem once by replacing the motor mount. The first time, it was just out of warranty and only had about 60,000 miles on it. It has manifested itself again (started a while ago - now has 114,000 miles on it)
I am the only owner of the car and it is now 10 years old. I won't change it again unless they redesign the motor mount.
You can replace the motor mount yourself if you are somewhat handy - it will cost around $100 for the part if I recall correctly. Make sure you prop the motor up; it should take about 30-60 minutes.

most likely you have blown piston rings. i wrote a solution but it was posted under similar problems. look there and it will help you out.
SOURCE: 97 SL2 dohc loud knocking sound coming from
you have a ROD knock,,,,the oil level can be good and compression can be good, but the bearing on the rod to crank is shot and now has too much play and is causing excessive play and noise, soon the rod will come out the block and seize the engine,,if its knocking that loud then its too late to fix it,,your gonna have to replace the engine really soon,,,sorry but its normal of the dohc engine to do this usually between 90 to 130k miles they let loose but the single cam dont have this issue
SOURCE: eninge knock with a known cam gear problems.
i had the same problem. had a knocking on the engine and let the vehicle sit until i had time to look for the problem. my unknowing mom took the car without permission and the car broke down on her. as it would turn out the upper timing guide rail broke off and damaged the cam gears and broke the upper timing chain along with damaging both the right and left lower chain guides, and the tensioner was also damaged. i would recommend that u inspect the lower chain to make sure that everything is good.

I am not completely familiar with the Saturn car lineup, but I will offer some information for the problem at hand.
It sounds like it has to do with something called a "Throttle Position Sensor". Again, Saturn may call it something different. On some vehicles, the TPS works in conjunction with a module near the cooling (radiator) system. As the car and coolant warm up, a springloaded device inside the module is pushed up allowing it to touch electrical connections. When these nodes are touched, completing the electrical circuit, it sends the information to the TPS telling it to lower the idle speed. If the TPS is faulty, then it will idle wildly as it warms up.
This may not be the case for your Saturn, but it sounds very familiar to a problem I had with a Ford and a Toyota.
Good Luck!
