98 jeep Grandcherokee instrument cluster failure

Hello,
vin no.1J4GZB8s5WY114165 ? so what model do you call this ?? it is a Laredo so is it a WG???

Need pin out voltages for a 98 grand cherokee larado connector to the cluster .( RHDrive )
Not willing to insert a new cluster untill loom checks out. My connector shows different to the infrmation provided by a friendly Adelaide jeep dealership. ( South Australia) Most manuals show this info but have only got wrangler and cherokee CD's not Grand cherokee 98 !!!!
Also, most diagrams show 2 ground terminals and mine reads as if there is no earth. I HAVE left and right indicators, one (fused at kisk panel fuse group OK ) constant 12 volts one 12 volt ign.start run, one dimmer control terminal, and 2 terminals reading 2.5 volts approx , assume these are the "bus" lines.
WHAT are the others and does any one know how to check out the new cluster to make sure it is the correct one ????

Have had an intermittent Failure of fuse control coils of auto shut down and fuel pump relays for several years now .fault goes before able to trace it. Longest the fault lasted was 20mins but still unable to find cause by discconecting items etc.As soon as I start looking for short in circuit before or in parallel with the relay coil circuits the fault disappears and I haveonly moved the power distribution box cover and tried to insert a test light in the circuit. Ffinally cluster has failed permently on all but hard wired items .ie no gauges and warning lights but dimmer control and ABS warning light working? . vehicle towed home. Fault gone no fuse blows but still no cluster. All other systems working .
My non genuine wiring diagrams show only imobiliser on same circuit but this system works although I am not sure if the chime worked immediately,. I think imobiliser is in module with sound device etc. But not sure .
Have stripped out loom around power distribution box - no visible damage and no electrical fault between relay coil to power control computer . Any way if there was an earth ing fault there the fuse would not blow. Must be a fault between fuse and relay but this goes into the main loom and difficult to get to. If I bypass it car starts now because there is not a problem. When I tried to bypass the fuse with another in line from hot side of fuse to relay input with the problem, the car started and then I found the problem goneso ofcoursethe car started . returned wires to original but cluster not working! !!!!!!*&^*^&%
cheers Kym Ware
ps i am a motor mechanic not an auto electrician!!!

OP sorry you are fixing a car you dont understand.
no engine stated, nor size or gas or diesel
and is a stalls post!
located DOWN under, zillion miles from us...oh joy;

the post a WG jeep (to usa) we dont have them here in USA, zero.

then post wall of text and endless problems
why stick to just one, fix that and move on.
pick one.(ASD is serious )
be best here, in serial endless, posts land.
i hate to pop your bubble but mechanics is now 1/2 electronics! facts.

EFI , and networks too. sorry but you need some class time.
I see you are mixing up different jeeps data.
why mix one countries books with others, for sure yours and ours
USA>
our 98 is WJ jeep ONLY sold only here.
outside usa. JG or, ZG, WG
sorry they are not the same car, nor are the clusters.

wow. nor many other things same, most of which are governed by each countries laws
KUDOS or 11th person ever here stating country, gee there is hope.
way to go there, here is big fat cigar and lotto ticket as prize! HOORAY!

this car runs from 1993 to 2017 and beyond
so vast books on them. huge by country (market)
you can not swap cluster willly-nilly, due to odometer laws
if you read the cluster page,(SM) it told you that
SM = service manual.
and yes, cluster runs on a network, all GC are.

if you had read the cluster chapter it told you
how to do the cluster self test diagnosis(methods)
costs 0 bucks 0 tools.
so if that passed, you scan the PCM
to see if there are no communication errors to the cluster.
no cluster can work on a DEAD NETWORK
just like dead WIFI, same same. deal.

you failed both steps; guessing here, is not possible.
dig?
seems like we can delete you whole post
and add this.
"Have had an intermittent Failure of injectors and ignition coils,l auto shut down and fuel pump relays for several years now:
sure many do... and will never be fixed, ever lacking a scan too. (I promise)

if then car has IMMO lamp,(lamp12> right corner)
called, VTA,VTSS,SKIMor SKIS)
if it glows at any time driving, that means KEY FAILURE.
"security key:" if in fact is is opted, and in europe they run there own, SKIM IMMO systems there. even back to 1996.

so not fitted with IMMO
then you must scan the PCM to see why the pcm Cut the ASD relay, you MUST there is NO other way possible
sorry, but is a FACT

so post, car drops ASD random times
and forget all that other stuff.

here:
checkfuses.
check IMMOBILIZer lamp.
scan it now.
if fail scan not,or even before failure we scan live driving
for fact the PCM will tell you WHO failed
is this hard? no!

http://jeepdied.com/ASD.html

if no scantool

BRICKwall results.

here is skim 2002 skim
see that lamp.. if it goes on driving all jeeps made on earth STALL,(BY DESIGN)
and 6 more causes of ASD drop and stalls.
salls have 50 cause, but im talking only ASD drop
induced STALLS

cluster fails for 2 reseans, the FUSES are blown or the data nework is dead
    only scans find the latter,!!!
if it passes the self test, bad network.

  • Anonymous Feb 26, 2017

you cant change the cluster out!
the odometers must match(3ways) or it will get all nasty on you, USA laws here make that fact( blocks odometer roll backs, illegallll)
ask you dealer who can do this?
listen to him clear as day.

  • Anonymous Feb 26, 2017

    cluster has zillion features
id bet all are not dead, I bet.
and if so, fuses are blown, learn to test fuse and not just look.
held lamps on back lamps i cluster works.
some wiring lamps are hard wired, and always work, like brake warnings.
    gauges. all dead? whata?

    one this or newer jeeps
    if you introduce module, (cluster,pcm.bcm
    from other car or un-progammed,
it thinks you are hacking the system
    then bricks it all,
so, avoid that like the plague or end up with 2 dead cars, or box of bricked modules.
    hint hint?

There is not just voltages on this there is data as well and without the ability to read it you cannot accurately test it. With the key on but not started press and hold the trip reset button. This may allow the instrument cluster to enter self diagnostics mode (works on caravans and many other chrysler brands of that era). Allow it to complete the test cycle and see if that fixes it. Usually ic problems are with the cluster...not the wiring or the vehicle side.

RPM GAUGE STUCK AT HIGH. Is this a transmission problem

What make , model an year vehicle ? Probably not a trans problem . Transmission has nothing to do with RPM gauge .More likely instrument cluster problem . GM vehicle's had a problem with stepper motors in the instrument cluster , these stepper motors are what control the gauge movement . This problem was 2003 to 2006 . Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop.

Instrument panel cluster and driver information center not working. checked fuses under hood, what else?

GM has had a issue with the clusters in the 2003-2005 trucks. The cluster will be replaced for free for your truck if it has less then 70k miles. I would take it to your local dealer and tell them that the voltage gauge sticks at times. They should order one for you, takes 1-2 days and replace it for you at no charge. If this does not fix the problem, you will have a new cluster at no charge.Unless the battery light comes on, the alternator should be good. This is a copy of the GM bulletin.

#07187C: Special Coverage Adjustment - Instrument Panel Cluster Gauge Needle Function - (Mar 20, 2009)

This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 7 years or 70,000 miles (110,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.

Dealers are to replace the instrument panel cluster after the condition has been verified. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

For verified failures between 70,001 miles (110,001 km) and 80,000 miles (130,000 km) on U.S. vehicles, dealers are to provide the customer with an instrument panel cluster (IPC) only. Any additional costs, including labor to replace the instrument panel cluster, will be the responsibility of the customer. Dealers are responsible for the return of the customer's IPC back to the Electronic Service Center.

For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after September 28, 2007 for 2003-2004 model year vehicles, and March 23, 2009 for 2005 model year vehicles, are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to September 28, 2007 for 2003-2004 model year vehicles, or March 23, 2009 for 2005 model year vehicles, must be submitted to the Service Contract provider.

Involved are all 2003 and 2004 model year and certain U.S. 2005 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles built within the following VIN breakpoints: 51100014-51247028 / 5E100002-5E223209 / 5F800001-5F882297 / 5Z100003-5Z224691

Good luck friend.
