I took my 2003 chevy avalanche to the shop today to have the alternator change. When I picked it up, il saw there was a light on on the dash. According to the manual, it's the cargo light. But I have no idea how to turn it off. Should I go back to the mechanic? How to turn it off myself?

you may have bad horn, take a test light and see if power is going to horn when horn is pushed, if theres power going to it then you have a bad horn,if theres no power to it then check the horn relay. but il bet if the fuse is good then the horns are bad.
It means just that, the transmission is overheating, don't continue drive it you will ruin the trany for sure. Get it to a trany shop it's most likely a simple fix.
If you're getting no power at all when you turn the key to start, try disconnecting the battery and then hook it back up. Chevy has had some problems with an ignition relay solenoid that's mounted under the driver's side dash. Disconnecting power could reset the switch....If that seems to be it, a replacement is around $250. at a chevy dlrshp.
It is possible that the alternator failed and took out the battery. while the vehicle is running disconnect the negative battery cable if the engine dies the alternator is bad.
