is the wheel locked ?? you may find the bolt that locks it has
seized up it usualy if free to move but can jam on
perhaps the lock it worn or has something inside the barrel not allowing key syncro
so use some wd40, a good rag and give it a good wash out
half a can and pull the key in and out and etc rewash and try again this will also free any parts that are stuck up
The steering lock is most likely jammed or possibly broken in the ignition locking position. Most cars have a plastic slide in the ignition which can become sticky and not return or the spring return mechanism wears out. Best to start by taking the ignition to bits and see if the plastic slide is stuck. light oil or WD40 should do the trick for a long time.
Have you tried to turn the wheel far to the left as you try to turn the key? Also try to turn the key backwards in the ignition while holding wheel to the left. If those don't work, maybe try sliding the key in with a little WD-40 as this will lubricate the ribs in the ignition slightly and just insert/remove key slowly and quickly a few times and then try the steps above.
Does the car have a key release button? Sometimes these get stuck with the wheel turned slightly and the ribs of the ignition will not close on the key to allow for operation of the ignition.
This sounds like a warn ignition lock. The tumblers probably are warn down and have too much slop so the unit is jamming. Try wiggling the key around as you turn. Good luck.
Take the steering column cover off and tap/hit the ignition barrel with suitable tool (small hammer)while twisting on key.It may be enough to loosen it so key comes out.You will have to remove steering column cover to swap with replacment barrel anyway .Get someone to turn steering wheel while tapping/hitting barrel as it could be the steering column lock pin thats jamming.good luck.
