I believe your problem will either be a stuck or defective blend door panel, blend door actuator or restriction inside the heater core. An infrared laser thermometer is a great tool. If you can borrow or buy one please do so. To test the heater core you need to verify that the temperature going in and out of the heater core is similar and the temperature going into the heater core is similar to the engine temperature.

The system to change from vent to defrost etc. it's all vacuum controlled. First thing I would do is look inside your engine compartment and look at all the black hoses close to the firewall. Check to see that they have no cracks, have come apart, this is also a good time to check your oil, and do a visual for anything that doesn't look tight or right. In Ford your temp is cable controlled but vents are all vacuum. Words case scenario you may have to take off that control panel to investigate further. One last thing if you can look under the dash tho make sure morning had been kicked loose. A good trick to use for an inspection like that is a mirror and flashlight. Let me know. Jim

Check for vacuum leaks. Common problem is the line that comes from the engine into the cabin of the car. It gets hard and brittle and cracks, then no vacuum to power the vent actuator pods.

the heater vacuum motor and lines needs to be checked.Also get the blend door checked.

There is no vacuum to the controls. Look for a vacuum hose that is no longer connected to the engine intake manifold and repair it.

If you cannot change the air flow from the heater vents, defroster vents, to dash vents, etc. as your control switch indicates the problem could be a loose vacuum line. It could have come loose from the engine under the hood. If not you will need to remove the control from the dash and check for vacuum at the control. If you have vacuum there you will need to replace the switch,

THAT BLACK HOSE IS PROBABLY COMING FROM HOOD LINER,THATS A BROKEN WASHER SUPPLY HOSE FOR YOUR WASHER NOZZLES TO SPRAY WINSHIELD OFF. HOWEVER YOU PROBABLY HAVE ANOTHER SMALL BLACK LINE THAT GOES THROUGH YOUR FIREWALL BEHIND DASH RIGHT UNDER PASS SIDE AND VERY BACK OF ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THAT IS A VACUUM LINE THAT SUPPLIES VACUUM TO YOUR A/C PLENUM TO ALLOW MODES OF OPERATION TO WORK WITH YOUR MODE SWITCH TO DIRECT AIRFLOW TO FLOOR,VENTS ETC... THE LINE IS BROKEN,DEFAULT IS DEFROST AND THATS WHAT HAS HAPPENED.

The problem is probably a faulty diverter door actuator or vacuum problem at the HVAC plenum under the dash. This is a common problem - see YouTube for help diagnosing this:

Their is a vacuum actuated valve that redirects the flow of air from the panel to the defrost vents when the defrost is selected. I would check the vacuum line running to the valve while the vehicle is running with the defroster on and check whether or not the line is pulling a vacuum to actuate the valve, if not you obviously have a bad line or vacuum line fitting. If you have suction on the vacuum you will need to check the valve and see that is functioning properly. The valve is usually located under the dash on the passengers side. If you are mechanically inclined i would go to a local auto part store and pick up a repair manual for your car for about $20 as they contain diagrams and info that will save you alot of money.
