      Coil on Plug
The coil on plug (COP) ignition operates similar to standard coil pack ignition except each plug has one coil per plug. COP ignitions have three different modes of operation: engine crank, engine running, and CMP Failure Mode Effects Management (FMEM).

      Engine Crank/Engine Running

During engine crank the PCM will fire two spark plugs simultaneously. Of the two plugs simultaneously fired one will be under compression the other will be on the exhaust stroke. Both plugs will fire until camshaft position is identified by a successful camshaft position sensor signal. Only one cylinder (under compression) will fire once camshaft position is identified.

      CMP Failure Mode Effects Management

During CMP FMEM the COP ignition works the same as during engine crank. This allows the engine to operate without the PCM knowing if cylinder one is under compression or exhaust.

2002 taurus 3.0L OHV stalls when hot have replaced IAC,camshaft position sensor, fuel pump and there are no codes on engine stall occurs most often when slowing and turning

If you have to wait to restart its usually a faulty coil or ignition module.
Someone would need to troubleshoot the ignition system when the engine fails to start to proceed. Could be a faulty relay too.

2002 Ford Taurus-won't start, replaced starter last night, started once, but hasn't since. Battery is good. Any ideas?

Have you thought of maybe checking the ignition switch that starts your vehicle. A faulty ignition switch will give you the same symptoms as a dead battery or a faulty starter. I hope this helps you out.

How do I change the coil pack in my 2005 ford taurus

    Welcome to Fixya.

Here's the procedure how to replace the ignition coil pack of your car.

    •1
Understand basic safety procedures. Any time you work on your Ford Focus, you should set the emergency brake and disconnect the negative, or ground, cable from the battery. Some mechanics recommend you isolate the cable to prevent accidental contact, which could spark a connection.
    •2
Release the spark plug wires from the Ford Focus ignition coil pack. You may need to pinch or press a release to unlock the wires.
    •3
Use a socket set or a small wrench to unbolt the ignition coil connectors. You also need to undo the capacitor electrical connectors. As you work, make note of which connectors go where--this pays off you when you reassemble the parts.
    •4
Locate the bracket that holds the ignition coil pack and the electrical capacitor in place. Undo the fasteners that secure them.
    •5
Separate the Ford Focus ignition coil pack from the mounting system. Replace the old Focus ignition coil pack with a new one. Verify the new ignition coil pack works with your engine, even if you use a universal ignition coil pack.
    •6
Reassemble the parts. If you have a Torque wrench, use it to tighten the ignition coil bolts with 7 inch pounds of torque (10 Nm).
