The key in my 2007 Chevy Cobalt broke off in the ignition. I need to replace the ignition but was told the key had a chip in it and the car would have to be reprogrammed to replace the ignition is this true?

A nice simple answer, you can't. Think of it this way, the car doesn't know you are the owner, and it is there to stop exactly what you are trying to do. You have two computer ECM and BCM, plus the antitheft module and a number of sensors all trying to stop you. All you have to do is the re-learn procedure. Plan B is an auto electrician or alarm / radio installer or auto locksmith.

30 Minute Re-Learn Procedure

1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
3. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds .

on key, if there is a "+" sign, it has a chip. Otherwise not.

problem in theft security system it has to be reprogrammed to new key new ignition switch key lock system. dealership fix need diagnostic eqquipment to reprogram new ignition key and ignition switch lock cylinder to the immobilizer control module and ECM.

pop your ignition out and tap it on a counter top or desk.

There is a TSB on this issues if your having ignition lock issues.

Attention: This bulletin only applies to vehicle equipped with automatic transmission.

The first time I did this I went to the local auto parts store and bought the shop manual for the car, which shows how to remove and replace ignition switch. (manual was around $25) Then I went to auto wrecker parts yard where they left ignition keys in the car, and got practice by removing the ignition from the donor car. Next head back home to replace your old ignition switch. This is cheapest way to do it yourself.

Does anyone know what the recalled part is for the Chevy Cobalt that causes the key to get stuck in the ignition? I would greatly appreciate any help on this as I do not have $600 to get it fixed.

Solder and shrink tubing work fine for that. That is for the pk2 theft module that tells the car that you are using the correct key with the chip in it.

I have not had this issue on my Cobalt, but I did encounter it on my 1997 Chevy Blazer.

There is a shift lock interchange that doesn't allow the car to shift unless the brake pedal is pressed in, and won't allow the ignition to be turned fully off if the car is not in park.

To remove my key I used to shift from Park to Drive repeatedly attempting to get the switch to lock in place. While it was very annoying, it eventually worked and the key was able to come out.
