Jeep Grand Cherokee - 1995 - Intermittent electrical fault. When driving along the power fails for the dashboard completely; the dials and gauges fail, all the lights go out and the radio turns off. It is like I have turned the ignition off. The engine however still runs and I do have throttle control BUT the brake pedal goes solid and obviously the brakes then do not work - which is a worry! Within a few seconds it comes back again but will repeat rapidly. Other symptoms(all recent) - the ABS warning light on the dash has illuminated but the relay looks to be ok. The "chirp" of the alarm does not work when either arming or disarming but the immobiliser works and so does the remote door locking. When the speedo and tacho gauges failed, jabbing the brake pedal brought them back up. This is all very bizarre and now the car is unsafe to drive - Please help. Many thanks Paul

USA CAR>?
power loss 12vdc to cluster.
basic, simple loss can happen. easy
get it fixed?
any shop in town can. that is what 99% do today

if not read the book the sm is free,
takes a $20 DMM meter to find it,
replace the 2 cluster fuses yet, that brake thing is very very odd.
sound to me like engine stall, and total vacuum loss as side effect.
brake hard is not the correct word
brakes hard and work perfectly as manual brakes do
and only the vacuum assists fails
in fact the brakes are totally ok ,just takes more pedal pressure.
BY DESIGN !@!!
its not unsafe unless 85 lb granny drives it.. see?
fuses, are first (always and for SURE 1995)

the book, and click ZJ
then click wiring
Chapter 8w page 40+
this cluster has a VOLT METER
see that?, if it goes to zero (tells you catastrophic power loss)
and head lamps work (DO THEY)???
then the key switch failed.? can be.... but...
or fuse block fuse 21 or 22 below. (or are loose or defective, rusty)
cab box both 15amp ATC fuses.
or fuse 12, under hood. 40amp.

SOURCE: all warning lights on dash come on and all electrics stop working

The common problem with the dashes on the Jeep is contacts. Remove the cluster and try cleaning the electrical contacts with a Q-tip and alcohol replace cluster and try again.

SOURCE: Grand Cherokee 1999 - ABS light went on solid ?

If the ABS light is on it is indicating a problem with the ABS system, not the mechanical braking system. Your brakes will still operate but not the ABS. So basically you'd need to go back to the old fashioned way of pumping the brakes. You'll probably need a new ABS sensor.

I wouldn't drive to long without getting it fixed because you may inadvertantly revert back to your familiarity and just stomp the brakes resulting in them locking up when you expect them to operate as normal.

Gauges on Dashboard

Are the dash lights working ok? Does the jeep start normally? If so, then there is most probably a fault in the instrument cluster.

How many miles are left when your gas light goes on with a 1995 jeep grand cherokee?

When the light comes on you typically have 40miles or less before your are completely out of fuel. This may vary however due to driving conditions, fuel gauge accuracy etc.

I have a 1996 grand cherokee. engine cranks but wont start. getting nothing on dashboard gauges and getting nothing but dashes on overhead digital gauges except temp. recently had new alternator put on. is...

More than likely needs a crank sensor, Try cranking with the crank sensor disconnected, you should not get the dashes in the cluster. The crank sensors take out the communication system of the vehicle

Electrical system goes crazy!!

Dirty Power and Ground connections. Working from the Battery, disconnect and clean all joints, along the Harness to the Main power box, and do the same in there.
It is a Ball acher, but it will fix the problem.

Guages when crazy. Now won't even try to start.

You likely have it repaired by now but it sounds like a classic case of oxidized battery or cable connection (sometimes mis-diagnosed as bad battery but cured with new (clean) battery)
