Buick Century 2003 service engine soon light

I have a buick century 2003. When it came time for my oil change 3 months ago my service engine soon light came on. When the car was serviced the light went off. When I had my oil changed this time my light stayed on. Buick man told me they did not reset the service engine light, Dealer wants to charge me $85.00 to diagnose the problem. Where is the reset button located.

Turn ignition to run, pump gas pedal three to four times until light blinks. It will then go off.

My service engine light was caused by a cloged passage from my EGR valve. Mine is a 3.1 with fuel injection 2003. All I needed to do was pull the two bolts over the intake plenum and remove the vacuum connection to the PCV valve. Then clean out the EGR port just below the vacuum connection in the throttle port. I would remove the rubber intake to vacuum it out. The carbon was like rock in there. Service engine light cleared on its own.

The service engine soon ligth is not the same as the change oil light. The change oil soon light you only need to turn the key to the on position and pump the gas to the floor 3 times with in 5 seconf\ds and wait. You will see the change oil light blink 3-4 times and then it is reset. The sevice engine sooncan be anything from a loose gas cap to a bad sensor such as a MAF. I just had to change that as the car was not getting poower on accerleration on my own car. The best thing to do is get someone witha scan tool and read the error code for the light and take it from there. You can buy code scanners that are OBDII compliant for arounf $50.00 and they are simple to use. If you can not do that then get a gargae to read the code for you and if you tip the mechanic a bit he will do it for free, if you know what I mean. to read the code takes less then 5 minutes.

On 2003 Buick Century had the oil changed but the change oil light comes on when I first start the car and stays on for about 3-5 min. Is it supposed to do that or does it need to be reset?

It just needs to be reset. Turn the key on with the engine off fully depress the accelerator three times. The dash should say "engine oil life reset" if done correctly.

2003 Buick Century Custom and the Service Engine Soon Light

You will need to have a reputable mechanic do a diagnostic check on the car to determine the problem. This should pull up a code number in your car's computer and help point the mechanic and you in the direction of the malfunctioning part/s.

Just today, I had a diagnostic check done on mine for nearly $45.00. The mechanic was able to figure out the reason why my service engine light was staying on. I knew my car's radiator fans failed to run when car's engine was hot except when the A/C was running. I had changed out the sensors and was never able to get the light to go out or get the fans working. They were able to determine that the 25 amp fuse for the fans located under the hood was blown. After replacing it, the fans worked as they should, my car runs cooler and the engine service engine light is now out. Of course there are many possible reasons why the service engine light may come on including problems with the car's emissions. A reputable mechanic can solve your problem.
