2001 Saturn SC1 5 speed manual transmission. The linkage has broken, stuck in reverse, shifter loose in the console. Are there any easy fixes, or do I need to blow my budget?
The bushings on ebay work from what I understand, but a bit pricey. The bushing in question is a P.O.S. for sure. Easy fix though if you have tools and time. First I drilled out the ball that the end of the linkage, the one your faithfull broken bushing use to ride on. popped a 3/8 inch bolt thru the drilled hole, put a piece of 3/8 inch heater hose "cut to length desired" over the bolt ( this is what the linkage ring rides on ) put a rubber gromet or rubber washer that has a hole big enough to fit over the heater hose on each side of the linkage ring ( oh and dont forget the lube - regular grease will eat rubber so use good judgement). put a washer big enough to keep your gromet or rubber washer from falling off, and then a lock nut, and I cannot stress the fact that it has to be a lock nut. DO NOT tighten the living **** out of everything, that little linkage ring is plastic after all just tighten it "lightly snugish" and just make sure your lock nut can't be un-tightened by hand. I hope all of this makes sense, anyway total repair cost- one hour of my time, about $4 of parts at the local auto parts store. best of all, it should outlast the car. Oh fyi, I used rubber parts because that is less likely to break the plastic linkage ring. Showed what I did to a mechanic in town, said now he actually knows what to do next time one of those f-ing saturns comes in with busted linkage. Good luck fellow "manual" saturn owners!
I've just developed this problem with my '98 SC-1 and am learning that a number of folks are finding that the problem is with the bushing that connects the cable end to the shifter [?] but that Saturn won't offer a fix for the bushing problem; must buy entire cable.....! eBay offers a shifter bushing that is made of delrin: much tougher and apparently this is a fix for this fragile original shifter bushing. A fellow on Ebay, offers a delrin replacement for ~$20.00. Try an ebay search for jcborchard or: improved Saturn stick shifter bushing. I hope this works for you.
An easy fix would be to go tothe Junk Yard and pull off the parts you need .......in order to do this though I would advise getting a Haynes Manual (VERY VERY HELPFUL BOOK) for your car...Available at your local Auto parts Store (even if you dont do it yourself you should still get the book...it can save you a lot of time and money when it comes to knowing and working on your vehicle)

Apparently the shifter bushing breaks pretty frequently, no junk yard in my area had one, Saturn dealer wanted to sell me the whole assembly for $300.00. I found the part on ebay for $14.00, got it within two days, no more problems.
i have a 1997 saturn and while driving it goy stuck in 3rd gear able to drive but the stick will not go into any gear
170K mi of use and abuse and the thing finally went as I roll out of my driveway into a busy street on my way to a night class... I come home later that night to find out the parts store doesn't have a replacement or fix for it. Hmmmmm, what ever is a Sr. Mechanical Engineering student to do?! DUCT TAPE BABY!!!!!! = D
Thanks for the e-bay tip everyone, I'll check it out. But for now... the theory holds true... duct tape really does hold the world together. At least at one point in time or another.
replaced shifter cables and it`s hard to put into 1st gear and reverse is this normal for new cables
