I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4.0L. The oil pressure gauge reads like a tachometer when the engine is warmed up, but it's a new sending unit. I also have to continuously put antifreeze in about every two weeks, if not more. There is no leaks, and no white smoke from the tailpipe that i have noticed. There does seem to be a knocking on top of the motor and on the bottom. It seems like i don't have as much horsepower as i should either, since i did a tune up about a week ago. Any suggestions?

4.0 engines have problems with micro-cracking in the cylinder heads that generally appear over 70K miles. If coolant is disappearing then obviously it's going somewhere! Knocking is not good...It's a sign of bearing wear (big expensive job). If the oil pressure is following rpm's that's normal up to a point. If it reads below 15psi at idle likely that's due to bearing wear as well. Where the coolant is going? Possibly into the crankcase..if so it can damage bearings. If coming in there slowly, much of it may be boiling off before you see it. Drain the oil and look carefully at what comes out. If I'm right about even a good part of what I've just said, you may be better off getting a replacement engine.

Sounds like water is getting into the crankcase. Check the oil to see if it is getting milky white. If so, you either have a blown head gasket or a creaked block. You might try draining and flushing the crankcase and putting a bottle of something like Bars Leak in the radiator. If the leak is small enough this might work. Good Luck.

SOURCE: audible knocking in rear of 1993 jeep grand

Sounds as If You Have A Chipped Tooth On the "RING GEAR" in the Differential (Rear Alex).
Is this Where You Hear The Noise Coming from? If So Remove Diff Cover With One Wheel OFF The Ground Trans In Neutral Rotate Drive Shaft and Look Closely For ANY Abnormal Surface on EACH Tooth of RING GEAR= the Large one And The "PINION GEAR" the Small one. If you find Chip or Rough spot Diff Must Be Rebuilt. Beyond that A Pinion Bearing can Also Make A Knocking Noise But the "GEARS" Will Be a Rhythmic Noise. I Hope this is of Some Help To You Good Luck !!

SOURCE: what type of antifreeze should i put in my 2000

Prestone comes to mind at first but most major brands are the same. Follow directions and mix your antifreeze with water in the ratio the manufacturer recommends. Sometimes straight antifreeze is worse than hardly any. I believe most manufacturers recommend a 50/50 mixture.

SOURCE: I have 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and it is leaking coolant

Front drivers side could be a bad cap, lower hose or the radiator itself. You need to look carefully and find the leak source. Steam travels and isn't a good indication of where the actual leak is coolant will run down and take any path it can to reach the ground. Therefore, you need to follow it back to where it is coming from, then deal with it. Your water pump can also leak and run down the lower hose. there is a small hole in the pump behind the pulley. If you see coolant coming from there the pump needs to be replaced. Sealers will not work on hoses or pump leaks so don't bother using them for that.

SOURCE: dissapearing antifreeze ,white smoke from tailpipe

if the vehicle is missing, pull the plug wires till you find the missing cylinder. pull the spark plug. it will be clean and most likely will be the head gasket. if no miss, start at the intake gasket. toughest part is the getting at the hose on the back of the upper intake. carefull not to damage the knock snsor.

Why all gauges quit working on 2000 jeep grand cherokee

Unfortunately you are not alone on this one and having a few friends with Jeeps this gets interesting. The shortest answer I've seen is remove the Negative Cable from the Battery for a few minutes to allow the voltage to fall in the system. Just pulling it off and putting it back on won't work just like home electronics power is stored for a few minutes in the system. This has worked to reset the system for some and off you go. If that is not the case you will be heading deep into a lot of diagnostic work and in some cases replace the ECM (Engine Control Module) which is about $1,000.00 last time I got near a Jeep so don't be bashful about checking everything.

What to check when oil pressure gauge flucuates while driving a jeep cherokee

To verify there is a problem, remove the oil pressure sending unit, replace it with a test gauge, start the car, idle, accelerate etc and watch the gauge for any abnormal variations it should react to evry change in acceleration and not be below the minimum or above the max as per the service specs.

What is the correct oil pressure for 2000 grand jeep cherokee larado its about 75 now. i want to buy this car but worried about the oil pressure.

Normal oil pressure should be between 40 and 60 psi. A cold engine will normally have higher pressure. If you're seeing 75 psi on a warm engine I would recommend having the pressure checked with a manual gauge to verify the gauge in the Jeep is working correctly. If the gauge is correct oil viscosity may be too high (oil too thick) or there may be a problem with the oil pump pressure relief valve. If the gauge is not correct the sending unit may be at fault.

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the oil gauge is going from 0-50 psi. There is oil in the engine. Should I be looking at the gauge or the pump for the problem.

the 1st thing to do is hook up a mechanical test gage and see what the pressure really is, the one used in the truck is electronic and u could have a sending unit problem, if the mechanical test gage show the same readings u will need a new oil pump, this assumes the engine doesn't have any bearing knock type noises

Have high oil pressure reading when driving goes down to 55-60 when sitting at light,2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo 2-wheel drive 4.0 litre engine

the 1st thing that needs to be done is have a mechanical oil pressure test gauge hooked up to confirm the actual reading, the electronic gauge many times is incorrect.

What causes the oil pressure gauge to fluctuate on my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo?

If the oil pressure is good and there is no engine noises then the oil pressure sending unit is the problem.Just replace it and you should be good.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Oil pressure loss

the 1st thing u do is have the oil pressure tested with a test mechanical gauge by a shop, most times it is just the oil pressure sending unit is defective, but never assume that is the problem, low oil pressure will distroy a $5000.00 engine very quickly, u can just try a new sending unit, but highly recommend a pressure test with a mechanical gauge before you run the engine anymore.

Pressure of the engine(oil sign)grand cheroke 2000

When the engine is cold, the oil pressure will be higher. It drops as the engine warms up and heats up the oil. If the pressure gauge gives readings that seem to be wrong, it's possible that the oil pressure sending unit is defective, and should be replaced. If the difference you are seeing in the gauge is due to variation in engine and outside temperatures, the it's normal, and don't be concerned.
