Fuel filter on 98 neon

Replace the fuel pump or replace the fuel filter first

The 98 and 99 neons don't have a fuel filter, they have a fuel screen that is right in line with the fuel pump. If your car is not starting and blowing fuses for the fuel pump, you will need a new fuel pump.

Fuel filter is located inside the gas tank and it cannot be replaced in alone. You have to replace the fuel pump as an whole

remove fuel from the tank
remove gas lines and tank straps

drop the gas tank and remove the pump from the top
reverse to reinstall

the fuel filter on this and most newer dodges are not serviceable, its inside fuel tank and are only replaced when fuelpump needs replacing, this fuel filter is designed to last the life of the pump,hope this helps.

Usually if a fuse blows when applying something else( brakes) indicates they are on the same circuit. Verify the brake lights don't work when the fuse is out or blown. If lights still are working then it's probably not related. If on same circuit then the extra load of the brakes is enough to blow the fuse. Insure you are putting in the correct fuse. Also, this indicates you fuel pump is in a strain either due to restricted fuel filter or worn pump. Replaceing the fuel filter now will only buy you a little time before the pump goes on out. It's blowing fuses because it's drawing more amps in order to run, but always replace filter when replacing pump.

'98 Neons had a Fuel Accumulator at the right front of the fuel tank. It is not a filter and does not require replacement. The only other filter is on the bottom of the fuel pump inside the fuel tank. It too doesn't require replacement unless you are replacing the fuel pump. A new pump will come with a new filter.

Check your power wire to the pump. It must have a bare spot somewhere, and is grounding out. Probably on top of the gas tank.
