93 jeep g-c ltd 5.2L v8. Had a problem with a broken bracket which snapped and caused the power steering pump to break and it took the steering gear box with it. Now it seems every other month the power steering pump needs to be replaced. Cause sometimes at idle or slowing down it becomes stiff, and sometimes it goes out completely. The new pump works good for a minute (month) and it breaks. The pump has been replaced about 4 times. What else could it be? Please inform.

SOURCE: i have a jeep grand

If it only goes stiff part of the time, the box is probably OK.

Before considering major surgery:

  • check the power steering fluid level.
  • condition of the fluid
  • condition and tension on the belts
  • check for low or uneven tire pressure
  • check steering linkages for damage (did someone borrow the car recently?)
If none of these check out, then consider replacing the pump.

SOURCE: All wheel drive v8 issues 96 Jeep Grnd Cherokee Ltd

Any all wheel drive will give less fuel miles.(compared to ones you engage as needed) The Chrysler v8 is a time proven engine, pretty much a copycat of a chevy with some changes to make it their own. Overall, I haven't heard any really bad stuff about them. If you look at the problems on this site, there seem to be fewer jeep probs than all other vehicles. (even though some problems are really weird!!!)
What you really need to see is the vehicles history to make sure it's been maintained and has not been back to a shop for the same thing over and over.
Good luck!

SOURCE: Jeep Wrangler 1997: Broken power steering pump

I don't know what the date was when you inquired. But, if you drive it will be o.k. as long as there was no fluid loss. You will just have to overcome the stiff steering. If you lost all of your fluid you will seize the pump and then it will throw the belt and you will be walking because your water pump will cease to turn and the engine will over heat.

SOURCE: power steering pump wines and stiff like when

If front end steering linkage and ball joints are free, likely the pump has worn out and is not making enough pressure.

SOUNDS very plausible ,have had it happen on bmw a few times ,would recommend buying bracket re-assembling and running vehicle and checking all other pulleys that run on the serpentine belt carefully for wear or noise as it is usually a vibration/loose brackets that cause a mounting bracket to crack or fail ,sorry cant help you on costs or availability ,it often changes with dealerships

Your Jeep should only have one serpentine belt. That belt powers the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump.
You should not drive without the belt. I would guess one of the pulleys locked up and melted the belt.

Why is my 93 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.2 v8 whining?

Did you check all the fluids? Power steering can whine when fluid levels get low. I would think of things that are driven by the engine: power steering pump (check the power steering fluid), AC compressor, water pump, and so on.

Check out the belt tensioner; make sure it's not too tight, and that the pulley is properly lubricated. If that doesn't fix it, ask your mechanic about timing belt issues (fairly soon).

Hope helps.

When i hit a bump at 50mph the cars front end shakes uncontrollibly

Yikes! I just had that happen to me, Have a shop inspect the front end completely. In mine there is a bracket that snapped, apparently its a part that often fails (according to my mechanic and the dealer). If you are lucky you can catch it early before it breaks the bracket and steering gearbox, and the power steering pump. The bracket costs about a little less then $300 and its a dealer part. The part is located on the frame and attached to the track bar. Oh yeah It could also be the track bar! See video for the problem I had. Hopefully it posts! If not send a message via Facebook. 96 landrover disco power steering pump bracket broken off

Really stupid question but did you get the correct belt and did you adjust the belt tensioner? On vehicles with spring type tensioner it must be pried back and then released. Slide type tensioners are usually either part of the pump bracket or alternator bracket assembly.

Leaking Coolant / Broken Pulleys /etc

Pressure test the system and check for leaks, use a radiator pressure testing tool kit. Sounds like the radiator may have been damaged by the parts breaking and flying about.

I would try and find one from a junkyard (auto recycler). Most of the time it is difficult to make sure the fit is right.
