My 1997 ford explorer has a grinding noise while coasting. if i accelerate when i hear it grind it stops immeadiatly. then it some times makes the same noise while shifting into reverse. but it otherwise pulls and shifts great.

I recommend that you check your brakes 1st try to determine whether the grind you hear is from front or rear or maybe under the center of your vehicle. you may have a bad universal joint also, does it pop or crack at all when you shift out of park on a hill? or when you turn ono way or another on a hill? if none of these i suggest you consult your mechanic for further evaluation. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

HOPE IT'S NOT PISTON SLAP, IF LACK OF MAINTANENCE WAS THE CASE MAY BE INTERNAL DAMAGE OR VALVETRAIN DAMAGE. IF IT RUNS ROUGH MAYBE SOMETHING ON ROTATING ASSY DAMAGED.

That's where I'd go first. check with driveline unloaded (neutral with wheels off the ground.)
