The Cougar uses the same platform as the Contour so it should be like it is on my Contour. Remove the rear seat bottom and you'll see a cover in the floor. Remove that cover and you'll be able to see the top of the fuel tank. You'll need to remove the lines coming out of the top and use a punch with a hammer to rotate that locking ring. Once you remove the ring you can pull the pump module out of the tank. Be careful not to bend the fuel level float. You'll be able to see how to get to the pump once the module is out. Just take the cover off and put the new pump in the module and re-install.

SOURCE: we keep changing the fuel

Hello, There is a Relay for the fuelpump and it should be in a Powerbox. It may be cutting off power to the pump. Before changing another pump, have someone check and measure the Voltage going to the pump. Also check your fuel pressure regulator.

There is another switch which you would need to reset if the car detects a big impact. It is called an Inertia switch and is usually in the trunk behind the carpet on the drivers side. Another location can be low in the cabin by the passengers kickpanel. I do not believe it is your problem. It will kill the power to the pump and you should be aware that it exists.

Under the hood there are a series of Relays in the Powerbox. That is why there are several terminals on each Relay. When you turn your Ignition key, it activates Relays which activate more Relays. This is the way the car knows different important parts are turned on. Unfortunately it becomes a liability when there is an intermittent short in the series of co-dependent Relays.

The last power wire to the fuel pump is what is important. You work backwards from there to find out where the power is being stopped if that is the case. If you have a little money to possibly waste, your car is a 1999 model. The Ignition switch could be worn out and disconnecting the power.

I hope my solution is very helpful to you.

Should be 4. One in front of the catalytic converter and one after on both front and rear exhaust.

My 99 mercury cougar is a 2.5 v6 (Problem) it sputters all the dash lights go off and the power steering dosen't work and the motor dies after it runs for a few minutes. the car will start after it sits...

Sounds like a fuel problem. The electronics shutting down are the result of the dying power. Start by changing the fuel filter. If that doesn't work; I'd look into the fuel pump.

1999 mercury cougar. won't start...cranks...battery ok.

V6 ? 4CYL? Have you verified SPARK? Did anyone check the "fuel pump inertia switch?" Its in the right front kick panel. If it was a "Anti-theft Issue" the light would be on or flashing.

I need to replace the fuel pump on a v6 1991 merceruy cougar. Do you need to drop the tank to do the job or is there access to the pump thru the floor? JR

THERE IS NO ACCESS THROUGH THE FLOOR, U MUST REMOVE THE FUEL TANK TO REPLACE THE PUMP. BE CAREFUL, GROUND TE TANK WHILE IT S OUT, DON'T USE ANYTHING TO REMOVE PUMP MODULE RETAINING RING THAT WILL SPARK.

I have 2002 mercury cougar v6,thats not getting fuel to the engine. IS there a fuse that controls the fuel pump? how can I determine if my problem is the fuse or the fuel pump. [email protected]...

O.k. Possibly no power to fuel pump. Should be a fuse in panel under dash, or under hood in power distribution center, marked (underside of cover maybe) fuel pump. Plus there should be a fuel pump relay, probably under hood. Check your owners manual for locations if you can't find them. Let me know how you make out.
