Have the purge system tested, and the regulator diaphragm looked at. also the lines, especially the quick disconnect lines up near the engine. You smell gas, but as the engine heats up, the gasoline evaporates and you don't see where it is coming from. This is dangerous in any case, not to mention smelly. The regulator is located in back of the engine (on top) near the throttle body. (just underneath it).
Start the car and let it run for a couple of minutes. Stop the car, and using a flashlight and a good retractable mechanic's mirror, take a look for wetness.
if the regulator (a small, flat inch and a half disk attached to the fuel line) is wet. have it replaced right away. The purge system canister can usually be tested by a good mechanic with the right equipment. You and I usually cannot do this ourselves.

cud be the tank also or other-get it to a shop that does a leak test-they use a dye then a detector lite--check yourself under car and hood for bad connections--follow any wet areas or try to target a smell

Car smells like gas and has trouble starting

This sounds like your evaporative emissions system acting up. Has the check engine light come on? There should be a charcoal cannister that filters the vented air/fumes from the fuel tank. If a vacuum or vapor line is broken, or removed.. or if the charcoal canister is depleted, you'll get the gas smell.

Air filter full of fuel

Sounds like your injectors are going bad. It concerns me that you have a odor of gas in the trunk since all of the fuel lines run under the car. Check your fuel filler line for a leak.

What will cause a strong gas smell after turning off engine

Check the fuel cap gasket to be sure it is not torn or worn. After that check the vent hoses that run from the fuel tank to the charcole canister located somonwhere under the hood. Is the smell stronger under the hood or toward the rear of the car? If you cannot find the problem, a fuel leak is dangerous and should be attended to ASAp by somone that has the experience to repair the problem
