I have a 2005 Silverado and around 75,000 miles the speedometer started malfunctioning. It would go to max speed, then everytime I started the engine it would step down about 5 mph until it finally reached normal. It would be ok for a while and then do it again. I found out there is a known problem with the speedometer. Depending on age of vehicle and mileage some of the repair cost is covered. You have to pull the whole dash unit and replace it. Dealer only, as they have to get a documented replacement with correct mileage. You may have a different problem but worth checking.
I would suggest that you replace the speedometer head,You should be able to locate one at a local salvage yard.Make sure that you notate the odometer discrepancy due to the mileage difference.
Sounds like the clocks have been tampered with if the speedometer is still working,
You can try running the miles backwards with a drill on the cable, and then forwards again past the number where it jammed, run it back and forth a few times and once it gets past the stuck number youre sorted... it may happen again in 1,10,100 or 1000 miles time... and if so youre best with a new or scrapyard speedometer - write down the original mileage when you change the speedometer - maybe on a panel under the bonnet so you have something to go off to decide when to service the car - EG old mileage + new mileage = actual mileage.
hope this helps.
the motor inside the speedometer unit has gone bad. it either needs to be replaced or rebuilt. you can usually find these in salvage yards but you stand the chance of getting higher mileage. cheers
Your car has the 125c/3T40 model trans,3 speed automatic with lockup. When you say you unplugged the "speedometer",if you are referring to a square electrical connector on the trans, facing the radiator, that connector is not the speedometer, but the lockup circuit inside the transmission. It is likely the lockup solenoid inside the side pan has gone bad and is malfunctioning. It is a common problem on those transmissions. You will lose some gas mileage by unhooking the connector, and eventually, years down the road, will hurt the trans from the fluid running too hot.Lockup clutch application in a General Motors lockup torque convertor helps to cool the fluid.
You need to find out if your speedometer is cable driven or electronic.
If it is cable driven there will be a cable running from your
transmission to the back of the speedometer. Sometimes the cables lose
their lubrication and break. Usually pretty cheap to replace.
If your speedometer is electronic there is a sensor on your
transmission that sends a signal to your speedometer. Either your
sensor (called a Vehicle Speed Sensor or VSS) went bad or your
speedometer quit working. The sensors are usually inexpensive....the
speedometers are NOT! Last one I needed I bought off eBay and purchased
one with the lowest miles I could find. If you ever sell the car you
have to mark the title that the speedometer is not correct. I usually
keep the old speedometer around along with a record of the mileage of
the replacement so I can always figure out the cars true mileage if I
need to.
