angelo, do you think that will work?

  • Anonymous Nov 01, 2010

I tried Angelo's suggestion, did not work!
    Now I will try yours!

  • Anonymous Nov 02, 2010

OK I will have thaat done. it seams if you spray gum oil in the intake it will start, does that help with your solution, but engine light stays on?

  • Anonymous Nov 03, 2010

So you think there is a leak on the intake side?
That will cause it not to start hot and bring up the codes, running lean LB?

  • Anonymous Nov 03, 2010

It can't be lack of spark, because if I spray gum oil it starts right up, rough for a little while but she smooths out!

  • Anonymous Nov 03, 2010

Some of the other solutions I'm getting is that I might have an intake leak, the fact that if I spray gum oil and it starts.

  • Anonymous Nov 03, 2010

Runs rough for a bit, but after it clears up runs perfect.

  • Anonymous Nov 04, 2010

I don't understand what term left bank means, seing its only a 4 banger . Fuel pump as ben replaced and fuel filter.I'll try spraying the vac lines as you suggested.
She runs great when ir starts! But the code still comes up!

  • Anonymous Nov 04, 2010

    runs good

  • Anonymous Nov 04, 2010

If the egr is closed when hot, the engine would not start just by spraying gum oil in the intake!

  • Anonymous Nov 05, 2010

ok their is spark when hot, because if I spray gum oil it does start. I sprayed brake clean after its running and listen for different engine sound and there is no change, I have changed also the temp. sensor unit, . I have disconnected the battery as suggested, to reset the codes. it does start but it runs like its going to fall apart until it warms up.Guys I haven't giviup on you yet!

  • Anonymous Nov 06, 2010

I have more to add maybe this will help to get an answer...when I disconnect the battery an then reconnect the battery to get the engine light out no matter hot or cold the vehicle starts and runs really, really bad, but engine light is out,. I must feather the pedal not to idle, idles perfect, but to raise rpms Imust feather the pedal, than if I need to take off I must feather the pedal until engine light comes back on, than once light is on it runs perfect until I shut engine off. Than I am back to original problem.. does not start hot I spray with gum oil it starts ok, but code #0171 comes up. MY MECHANIC IS TOTTALY BAFFLED!!!

  • Anonymous Nov 06, 2010

I doing or I should say my michanic is doing everything thats being recommended. So far he as checked for manifold leaks,ok; replaced converter and both sensors fuel filter, temp. sensor; and the code comes up as lb on the 2.7 engine. But it starts ok when cold, but it not start when hot except when you spray gum oil in the intake it will start!

  • Anonymous Nov 09, 2010

Did that, starts cold no engine light, runs terrible until it gets hot. Runs ok after and than light comes back on!

  • Anonymous Nov 09, 2010

I do have spark, because if I spray gum oil in the intake she starts!

  • Anonymous Nov 09, 2010

I will tell my tech to close the gap. I spray gum oil and she starts?

  • Anonymous Nov 09, 2010

No vac leaks, runs fine when it starts cold!

  • Anonymous Nov 09, 2010

    Fuel pump is new!

  • Anonymous Nov 09, 2010

How could she so good if the pressure wasn't good?

  • Anonymous Nov 09, 2010

she would not idle if the egr valve was closed when hot, and spraying gum oil would not help if the egr valve was closed, would it?

  • Anonymous Nov 09, 2010

its a 2.7 so she would be running lean on all cylinders. Sensor as been replaced! Plugs are good!

Hi! This will mean that the Left Bank is running lean. Few things can resolve this, one is to replace the spark plugs or the oxygen sensor. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

LB running lean - there is not enough fuel coming to the cylinders of the left bank of the engine. Since it's a problem in just one bank then it can't be th sensors and definitely not the converter. Something is wrong with the injectors on that bank and since they can't be reliably cleaned while still fixed on the engine you must take them out and take then to a specialized shop to have them cleaned. With them out use this opportunity to also take apart the fuel system and check every single fuel line.

  • Azrael SRL Nov 04, 2010

I supposed you had the most common engine - the 3 liter V6. If you have the 2.7 liter L4 then the entire engine runs lean. Check the fuel pressure regulator and the vacuum lines connecting it to the intake manifold.

First thing that needs to be checked is the abscence of spark when it will not start. Running lean could be a vacuum leak on the left side or perhaps a clogged injector. How does it run when it does start?

This condition can be a variety of things.First off it could be a nice vacuum leak, anywhere from a hose or a damaged intake or plenum manifold, or even a plenum or intake runner gasket that has failed. This could also be caused by a failing fuel pump, not running as high as it normally does, or even a restricted fuel line or a plugged(restricted) fuel filter. The easiest way to check for a vacuum leak is with a can of brake clean.Start the vehicle, and spray on your vacuum hoses and around where your intake and plenum meet up with your engine block. If the engine changes in rpms and sound then you definitely have a vacuum leak where you have just sprayed. The fuel issue is simply done by purchsing a fuel test gauge from your local auto parts store, this runs about $35.Then you can get a better idea of whats going on.Please get back to me if you have any more questions.Thank you and rate me accordingly,
Gearhead.

Hi,
Another reason it could be saying the Left bank is running lean is due to a vacum leak. This could be your inlet manifold causing this issue, have a leak test done on it, and also have your manifold vacum hose's checked for leaks.
Hope this helps, let me know if you need more information.
Thanks
Jason

  • Anonymous Nov 02, 2010

Yep, that just goes to show you have a leaking intake manifold.

Once this is repaired you then need to run the vehicle for a few kilometers which will then clear the fault codes.
Or use a scan tool to remove the codes.

  • Anonymous Nov 03, 2010

Yes, as the engine gets hot the gap will increase and with the extra amount of unmetered air running past the manifold the engine is trying to start on a normal air/fuel mixture, when in fact it is getting too much air, and once this is picked up from the O2 sensor it then try to compensate for it.

Left Bank running lean could be that the injectors are not firing properly. Try running injector cleaner through the system. Usually when you have a problem with not starting when the engine is warm, it is a ignition problem. But not always. Coils cause this problem quite a bit. The wire in the coil expands when it is warm and shrinks back when cool. When it expands, it loses connection. And then it cools and makes connection again. But the lean problem could be dirty injectors or injectors not firing.

Hi. Try to disconnect the battery for awhile. That should reset the sensor.

Truck runs then after a few mins ya shut it off and it wont start back up intell it sits a while

sounds like your protective starter shield was removed during previous starter replacement at one time and wasn't installed back. What's happening was when engine is hot the starter solenoid gets fried then, when its cold again it goes back to normal application. The job of the shield is to protect the starter from being heated from exhaust manifold right above the extreme heat. Another possibility is your starter relay to the solenoid but the fact that it starts again its the solenoid problem. Good luck

1998 Toyota T100 Should I buy a new engine if it has 515,000 on it original engine ?

Wow, thats alot of miles! How well does it run? Hopefully you have record of the parts that have been replaced allready. You could replace the engine with a new one, but how many miles are on the transmission, injectors, sensors, differentials, ect..? Maybe you could buy a wrecked truck with low miles, transfer most of the drivetrain and drive it another 500 k. The way I see it, if you invest $2,000.00 into the truck and can drive it for two years without any more major investments / repairs, you will have invested well...I hope this helps.

I have a '96 Toyota T100 that started missing. I have replaced the spark plugs and the air flow sensor and the check engine light has went off now. Drove it for a few minutes everything was fine and now...

Check the fuel pump pressure and fuel pressure regulator. If the fuel pressure is regulated to the idle setting while at cruise power, it could cause lean misfiring.

Check for a sticking EGR valve. Also, an EGR valve that has a leak in its vacuum diaphragm.

Check for vacuum leaks.

What codes do you have?
You start with the check light issues first

I just parted with a truck, I had over 18 years with OE Plug wires,
one before 17 years ,and my current one, 20 years,I have owned it 27
Had one wire burn out near plug in 1990

Plugs never misfire by design, they do however wear the electrodes,
which stresses ignition modules

1997 T100 V6 has rough idle on initial start for about 5 seconds then runs fine.

You may have a head gasket issue or just need a tune up.. If you need a head gasket what is happening is just a litle coolant is leaking into the cylinder so on cold starts it causing a misfire. Get to properly diagnosed. You could be wearing out the cat.. if it keeps up then you will set a check engine light for a dead catalytic converter.
