Every now and then my 98 Saturn wont start...it doesnt try to turn over but have power-usually after about 20 minutes of trying it will start

Wriggle key around while pushing in before starting, then try starting, if it starts, replace ignition switch...

If you car is equipped with a security system try resetting it using your remote from outside the car wait a couple of minutes and use the remote to unlock the car, then try starting it, sounds like a security system error.

I have exactly the same problem started last winter, ran fine all summer then as soon as it got below freezing again if I start it and run for 15 20 minutes wont restart I have to let it sit for 20 minutes or so and then it will start again. no codes and just turns over without starting. cant be fuel pump like i said had this problem last winter then ran fine all spring summer and fall! Anybody got the answer for this one??

This is a classic example of a failing security system. Random no starts are common and will only get worse. (trust me, its allways at the WRONG time) Read this link top to bottom to understand what is going on. There is a solution to your problem on this site. And trust me its cheaper than the dealer. PS. Look on your dash for a light that says SECURITY or a picture of a car with a padlock thru it, when it doesnt start. This is a dead give away that this is your problem

did you check the voltage of the battery.?

because the power required for lights and radio are very less. but for starting the engine is more becaause ot needs to turn the engine. please check the voltage it should be 12-14 volts.
if it doesnt have this much power charge the battery and check start it wil start.

try locking and unlocking the car with the remote, maybe a anti-theft issue?? what do you mean" tries to start?" either the engine turns over or it doesnt. if it turns over, but wont run, thats another story.

if all it does is click with a new battery it is not the alternator because all the alternator does is charge the battery i would take the starter or selinoid off if it isnt built in with the starter and have it tested the same as you did the battery

lock the car using the key to reset the alarm

It is a common problem on Saturn Ion... You have to replace the pass lock switch. The cost of the part is around $65.00 cdn. It is located behind the key switch.
