The 3100 is a Chevy 2.8 and the 3800 is a Buick engine.
Most everything is different including exhaust manifolds, engine brackets, and wiring.
Code 420 refers to the catalytic converter in the exhaust pipe.
The code means the engine computer things the cat is not working correctly based on the data coming from the O2 sensors.
The sensors and the cat would need to be inspected.
I think you got misinformed about what fault P0420 is, the GM manual says this: "P0420 -Catalyst System Low Efficiency" What does that mean? it means the main catalytic converter in the exhaust system is worn out, it could be the Catalyst monitor that is bad, it is what triggers the code when it reads a certain voltage from the system, but that is rare, you could replace it (the catalyst monitor) and see if the code clears, if not you will need a new main Catalytic Converter.
po420--- catalist efficiency below threshold--- possible fix. a po420 means that one or more of the following has happened. the easiest thing to do, is erase code with scanner. and see if it comes back. the engine coolant tempuature sensor may not be working properly, damaged exhaust manifold, or catalytic convertor may be bad. check 02 sensor also behind convertor towards rear. its really hard to say can be anyone off above!! but check 02 sensor first it may be bad.
Catalyst Effeciancy below threshold (Bank 1) is the code meaning. Check or replace the oxygen sensors. Some cars have 2 .One is on the front of the cat. the other is the on the back. Check the back sensor . Other possible causes are leaking or damaged exhaust manifold, bad coolant temp sensor.If toyota did not replace both . replace the one on the back of the Caty.
