Here is a firing order diagram and note the distributor cap latch positions between terminals 1 and 2 and 5 and 4, and let me know if you need any help to understand this diagram or if you require any further assistance.

The cylinder banks are odd and even numbered. driver side bank 1 3 5, passenger side bank 2 4 6, from front to back. firing order, 1 6 5 4 3 2. the rotor, cw rotation. I'd put the #1 cylinder on top dead center of compression stroke, then which ever spark plug tower the rotor is leading into, in the direction of rotation, is number 1, then follow the firing order around the cap. Sorry, I don't have picture of how cap is numbered. good luck
I was surprised to find Dodge still using a distributor on this engine. The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 and the cylinders on the driver side are 1-3-5-7.
firing order is 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 standing in front of truck. cylinders on passenger side facing you are 2 4 6 8 cylinders on driver side facing you are 1 3 5 7 now this is your spark plugs wires location on distributor cap.with distributor facing you.2 plugs wire on cap 6 oclock position 1 plug wire on cap 8 oclock position,8 plug wire on cap 9 oclock position,4plug wire cap 10 oclock position,3 plug wire on cap 12 oclock position,6 plug wire on cap 1 oclock position, 5 plug wire on cap 3 oclock position, and 7 plug wire on cap 5 oclock position. in order for this to work you must be standing facing the engine all plug wire location on cap should be correct.
From the 2001 Dodge Dakota maintenance manual. Note the numbering of the 6 cylinders and the arrow indicating front of engine. Firing order: 1-6-5-4-3-2, with distributor rotating clockwise.
I do not have a breakdown diagram for a distributor, but just the firing orders and description of ignition system for the Dodge Colt and related models (based on Chilton manuals) if that's what you're looking for:
FIRING ORDERS

To avoid confusion, replace spark plug wires one at a time.

Distributor REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Although the distributor can be removed from the engine no matter which cylinder is about to fire, it is a good idea to have number one cylinder at TDC before distributor removal.
1.5L, 1.8L, 2.4L SOHC Engines
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Disconnect and tag the spark plug wires from the distributor cap.
Disconnect the distributor harness connector.

Loosen the distributor retaining bolt and remove the distributor from the engine.
To install:
Rotate the engine until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on its compression stroke.
NOTE: Be careful not to turn it to the No. 4 cylinder TDC on its compression stroke by mistake.
Align the distributor housing and gear mating marks.

Install the distributor into the engine, while aligning the fine cut (groove or projection) on the distributor flange with the center of the distributor mounting stud.
Install and tighten the distributor retaining bolt.
Reconnect the distributor harness connector.

The Dodge 3.9L (238 cubic inch) Engine from 1988 thru 1996 is the same:
Firing Order: 1-6-5-4-3-2
Cylinders: (back of engine) 6........5 4........3 2........1 (front of engine)
