My 1992 Saturn SL2 needs a muffler. Don't want anything expensive since I don't know how long the car will last before needing something major. I can buy a muffler, but my question is about installing. Will it require welding?

Looks like a large muffler, in the exhaust pipe, near the engine.

You need to bench bleed this type of system. Watch the video for details on this type of bleeding.

A Few dallars at your local parts store. You might need some fittings which they should have as well.

Clean oil,preferably synthetic
O2 Sensors that work correctly
PCV that works well
No vacuum leaks

It is tucked under the intake manifold

my only guess is a vacuum hose leak. possibly a loose air filter housing, or the mass air flow sensor. look for any hoses unplugged. if nothing is noticed, try cleaning out your fuel system. if that doesnt solve it, then it would be something an experienced mechanic would have to come and examine it personally.

It sounds like a bad connection on the instructment panel itself; however, it may have destroyed the panel by now. The noise that you maybe hearing doesn't sound connected; however, you might try kicking your muffler with your foot and see it that sound could be coming from the muffler since they are notorious for that.

You may be looking at the heat shield above the exhaust pipe. For the most part this is not an expensive fix unless you live in the socalled "saltbelt" where the salt from the snow removal eats away the mounting points on the shield.

There are only two paths for oil there. The rear main, and a oil galley plug a little higher up, about 2 o'clock.
