One would have to remove the half shaft to service the cv joint properly.

Once the boot tears open, the joint is contaminated and will often wear out in a short time. If your boot is only recently torn, you may be able to use a split boot repair--doesn't require removing axle. If the joint is alreay worn, replace the axle.
