My 04 Avalanche will not let me fill the gas tank as the fill nozel keeps shutting off as I have now tried to fill at 4 differant pumps. Yes the tank is near empty but I can hear the gas coming up the fill tube as if it were full causing the nozel to shut down. Could there be a vent tube clogged? There does not appear to be anything in the fill tube but I can only see about 6" into it. I did put a flexable grabber down the tube about 2' but came up with nothing. I don't think anyone would have put something in my gas tube but cannot be sure. The truck runs fine as i have had from new and now have 105k miles.

Is there a check engine light on? The first thing I would do is look at the vent solenoid. GM has had issues with these either sticking closed or the filter getting plugged.

Find the charcoal canister. It will be mounted near the fuel tank. There should be a large hose attached to it. On the other end of that is is the vent solenoid. Remove it and see if you can fill the tank.

If you can than see if you can blow through the vent solenoid. With it unplugged you should be able to blow through it easily. If you can't than it is broken and needs to be replaced.

I beleive GM has updated the part and routing for that year. You can check with the dealer to see if that is the case.

Yes the check engine light is on but has been on for about 8 months now with no fueling problems or any problems. It is an emissions problem in the engine causing the light to be on although because the light is on I do not know when other problems occur that would also cause the light to be on. I will check as you described but do you know a web site where I can get a printout of my fuel system showing the components you speak about?

    Thanks for the help!

Mine does this also. Here is my cheap fix. Put the gas nozzle into your Avalanche and rotate it towards the back of the truck. (So the handle isnt up and down, now its sideways) Doing this means you cant walk off and wash the windshield while its filling, you have to stand there and hold it, but changing the angle of the nozzle works for mine, then it fills up fine. Can be a pain to stand there while it drinks down 20-25 gallons, but cheaper than replacing anything...

My Avalanche does this. Here is my cheap fix. When you put the gas nozzle into the truck, turn it towards the back of the truck and hold it there while filling. Now it is sideways instead of up and down. Changing the angle of the nozzle seems to work. This means you can't walk off and go wash your windshield while the truck sucks down 20 or so gallons of fuel, you have to stand there and hold it, but its cheaper than replacing a part, or it will at least let you fill up until you get it repaired/replaced. I have been doing mine like this for over two years. Just my opinion though.

Shuts off when idling

You may have cooked the fuel pump. Or the gauge may be off.
I would check fuel pressure with a gauge and make sure you have gas in the tank. Anything less than a quarter of a tank is rough on the pump. It needs liquid gasoline to keep cool and lubed.

When pumping gas the gas nozel shuts off at a $1.50. Then i have to wait 10 seconds to pump more.

That sounds more like a problem with the nozzle, check quite a few different pumps. If it keeps happening at multiple locations, might have someone check to see if your fuel tank is misshapen.

Having problem with trying to gas up the elantra. gas pump handle keeps clicking off. have to squeeze handle real lightly to fill up tank takes a long time to fill up. help

I know you probably won't like my answer, but seeing as I am a service tech for gas stations, the nozzle has a safety feature which shuts/kicks off when gas splashes back into the nozzle, thus keeping the gas from running over when the car is unattended and nozzle is locked. You can try pulling the nozzle back til it is barely in the tank or try a different gas station as some nozzles are different. As it is the shape of the fill tube on your vehicle. Hope this helped Tim

Fuel fill problem gas pump keeps shuts of when i try to fill

Iown 02 hyundai accent gl 1.6l. Had the problem twice. I used to over fill the tank until I had to spend close to $550.00 USD. The problem is when we overfill the tank. the carbon canister gets clogged and it damages a sensor in the assembly called "DMTL". Thia assy is located under the rear driver side of the car to the left and rear of the fuel tank. Once I replaced the carbon canister, sensor and filter the problem went away. if you let it go for a long time you eventually start smelling gas inside the car after fill ups. Good luck.

Sonata 2003

We have an "04 Suzuki Verona that does the same thing, we have found that it is not the station as much as it is the angle that the tank inlet is on. When you put the gas nozzle in, it fills with some air to replace the gas comming out of the nozzle. Unless you find a place that has a higher pressure pump, you are in a long and "Clicking Off" ownership when it time to pump gas. For the record, I have noticed that if I chose the lowest setting on the handle, the pump will ussually fill about $10 at a time. two or three of those, and its a done deal. Hope this helps you.
