If it is an SL1 it has a SOHC 1.9L. Basically the same engine was in all saturns 91-99, just different heads. the Sl2 had double over head cam and the Sl1 had SOHC.

I have a crack engine. Need to put in another engine. Will a 2001 engine fit into a 1998 saturn sl1

No, you need a 96 through 98 engine, make sure the one you get is the same as yours, that is if you have an SL1 your donor car must be an SL1, SW1 or SC1 and if you have an SL2 then your donor car must be an SL2, an SW2, or an SC2. You can buy rebuilt engines for about 2000 with core exchange
might make more sense if you intend to keep it a while and if a manual then do the clutch while it is out.

Type of oil for Saturn sl1

no, but with a older vehicle like this, it does not hurt to use a thicker oil grade like 10w30. i would also use this oil stabilizer called Lucas engine oil treatment once a year. it goes in like molasses and from experience, it cures the light engine knock.
