My 94 Camry has a brake light failure warning light on the dash (not the ABS light) that will come on when I first step on the brake after I start the car and then it stays on. no lights are out, the warning light sensor in the trunk works fine, I checked the master cylinder reservoir and it is full. also I looked inside and the float isn't stuck. I have no clue what else to check.

The ABS light illuminates when there is an "out of specification" condition. From your description, it sounds like your parking brake cable may require tightening, or there may be an issue where the rear brakes are not properly releasing when the parking brake is released. With car that is nearly 20 years old, it is not inconceivable that the rear brakes and parking brake assembly may require regular service.

A good first step would be to have error codes read out by a local mechanic or auto parts store. This may give you a better indication of the specific problem. In any case, ANY brake warning should be taken VERY SERIOUSLY and corrected IMMEDIATELY, as you may have a potentially dangerous potential of catastrophic brake failure. IT could be a light warning you of a possible serious fault in the engine/ transmission ( engine fault light from no water ,brakes etc ) have it checked out before it can become costly.. Your ABS light is on because the system detected a failure in the brake system. Sounds like either your master cylinder is bad or one of your brake lines has ruptured. Usually a master cylinder seal will degrade over time, not insantly. In a dual master cylinder configuration like all newer vehicles, you should still have some braking, even if a front or rear line ruptures. 1st step, check your fluid level.

If the abs warning light is on, you will need someone to scan the computer for trouble codes to proceed.

So many lame responses...I went through this same experience and can tell you in my case it was the alternator. All of the warning lights such as the ABS light, airbag light, the warning about the brakes are all because the alternator is not providing the DC voltage all of the car's sophisticated electronics need to correctly monitor these subsystems' status. Mine left me high and dry by the side of Interstate 5 needing a tow. The low battery warning was off and on for about an hour before all of the other warning lights came on, and then about 5 minutes later every needle on the dash went to zero and the car died. After sitting waiting for the tow, it did start up again, but we got it towed to a dealer (thank god it got us within 8 miles of a dealer! the first warnings started when we were in the sticks) who diagnosed it as an alternator. $1200 and two days later and all is well again.

having the same problem with my 1999 s80 2.9 . replaced the abs module twice and still get the brake failure warning. when the ignition key is turned there is a clicking sound from the center console beneath the shifter, then the brake failure warning, and the car will not start. (also after the last abs module replacement the car sometimes gets stuck in park).

depending on the system if it is 2 channel or 4 channel one of the sensors that are located on the backing plate located behind calipers is eithier faulty or dirty you can try brake cleaner these sensors use a small magnet pickup device to sense when the wheel "locks up"
