First, loosen your wheels and re-tighten in a star pattern using a torque wrench.(setting of around 70-75 foot lbs is good) If that does not help, check your ball joints. Especially the lowers as they have no provision for lubrication and do not last as long as they should.Track bar end at the chassis should be checked to make sure it's tight and that the bolt hole has not become oblong. Other than that, check all front end components for looseness. The steering stabilizer (sideways shock on steering linkage) is often blamed for that condition and though it can be damaged by it, it never is the cause. Last, in extreme cases where everything has been checked and proves to be good, you can have an alignment shop put a bit more caster in the settings. that causes it to want to go straight without wheel flutter.
I gave you recommendations in the order of importance. I've dealt with and cured this condition (called death wobble) on many many Jeeps. If you have any questions just ask!!!
i have read 7 different reports like this one below
Well - my steering was acting up too and I had just received something from GM to say that there may be a problem but don't bring the vehicle in unless it is giving you problems. I would be driving along and all of a sudden the steering wheel get's "Heavy" feeling and I'm not sure if it will stop steering all together. So I took it in and was told that the steering column needs to be replaced. So they order the parts - takes over 1 week to come in and they do the work. The bill was $435.00 and GM did cover it. However I am still having the problem and the other day - 2 days after having it "fixed" I was driving down the highway and the steering wheel starting jerking around in my hand and the whole care was vibrating. I pulled over and got out to check my tires to see if I had a flat. I waited a few minutes - got back in and started to drive again and it was fine. The steering is still acting up and now after reading all this stuff here I am worried about driving it anywhere. I have a son in Special Olympics and we have to drive 60 km. each week on the highway to go swimming. Yikes - is this car safe to drive!! I called my dealer to tell him my problems and I am hoping that it acts up when I can drive it in there so that they can see what it's doing. This is crazy!!
