Have the car scanned. Many parts stores (autozone, advance, others) offer free scan service.
Is there no way to manually pull codes on a 91 mazda without a code reader?
Yes, you can use the MIL light to flash the codes.
look here: http://www.troublecodes.net/mazda/91MZDp...
During the self-test a service code is reported by the malfunction indicator light. It will represent itself as a flash on the CHECK ENGINE or SERVICE ENGINE SOON light on the dash panel. A single digit number of 3 will be reported by 3 flashes. However, if a service code is represented by a 3-digit number such as 111, the code will appear on the MIL light as three flashes, then after a two second pause, the light will flash three times.
Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperatures.
Turn the engine off.
Warm up engine to normal operating temperature and turn ignition "OFF."
Ground test connector (Green: 1-pin) with a jumper wire.
NOTE: Test connector is located next to self-diagnostic connector.
Turn ignition switch "ON."
If MIL illuminates, goes off, and stays off, no codes are present.
If MIL illuminates, goes off, and then starts flashing, codes are present.
Start engine and check for additional codes.
If any codes are retrieved, refer to Malfunction Code Charts under DIAGNOSTIC CHARTS. Repair as required.
AFTER-REPAIR PROCEDURE
Erase ECU malfunction code memory by disconnecting the negative battery cable and depressing the brake pedal for at least five seconds. Reconnect battery cable.
(connector is by the right side wheel well in the engine compartment) and then turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Service codes will be flashed on the MIL light.
