The tail gate on my 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport will not open. When the handle is pulled the top half-window flips open, but the tail gate latch seems to be stuck. Please help!
Solution may be it is just missing a bolt if you exam the pull bar that runs up and down which is connected to the door handle you may see that there is a hole.if bolt is missing put one in and bingo problem solved.Solution may be it is just missing a bolt if you exam the pull bar that runs up and down which is connected to the door handle you may see that there is a hole.if bolt is missing put one in and bingo problem solved.

Mine did this too....the latch kept getting stuck. If you put the key in the ignition and unlock the power doors, pull on the gate door (don't open it, just enough to release the latch), and it should come out so the hatch will latch.
You will need to remove the interior panle from the loft gate to axess the latch
there is 4 screws along the bottom of the panle to remove then carfuly pull the panle away from the lift gate there is plastic clips that hold the panle to the gate these may need to be replaced when re installing the panle they can be purchased at the jeep dealer.
now look into the lift gate and you will see where the handle rod conects to the latch lift on this rod and the gate will open
to replace the handle remove the 2 10 mm bolts and disconect the rod from the latch install the new handle and rod to the latch install the 2 10 mm bolts. install the panle and 4 screws
this should cover it
REPLACING THE BULB IS EASY. OPEN THE LIFT GATE, LOOK TO THE SIDE THAT YOU ARE REPLACING. RIGHT BESIDE THE TAIL LIGHT THE ARE TWO SCREWS. REMOVE THEM AND TAIL LIGHT SHOULD JUST PULL OUT. MAKE SURE TO UNPLUG IT AFTER IT IS LOOSE TO MAKE IT EASIER TO REPLACE THE BULB.
I would check to see if the latch is in the closed position.Using a screwdriver I would (with the gate open)have someone or your self do the action like you are opening the tail gate and try to move the striker in the door like the door is being pulled open.If the latch moves to the open positin gently try to close the door to see if it latches.
Hi;The latch/ouside handle is held on by four bolts on the inside of tailgat. Remove the four bolts and the handle should come clear so you can see the mechanism. Your on you own now.
from inside if you can get to the panel and remove it to reach the mechanism to open the tailgate and try autozone.com to see if they have your car listed for diagrams pictures and step by step instructions if your car is not listed then try your local library they have all the car manuals and even copy them for you
I had the same problem onmy dad's Jeep KJ (Cherokee/Liberty) so i went ahead and unbolted the tailgate handle;
First you need to take off the plastic inner tailgate cover (doh), then carefully pry away the the black liner and you'll see 2x 10mm hex nuts, unscrew both. Then on the latch outer side of the tailgate remove the upper 2 torx screws, then loosen one of the clamps of the connecting rod between latch and handle. While pulling out on the handle (needed to clear the mechanism from the sheetmetal) you'll be able to carefully remove the complete doorhandle assembly. There's still one wireloom attached to the handle, this is the culprit, It's the little actuator switch that's need liberal amounts of lubricant such as WD40 or similar. I actually removed the switch and pushed it several times to full stroke after i lubricated it, then reconnected it and presto! The rear window unlocked every single time by means of the doorhandle instead of using the wireless remote...
Easy fix, done in half an hour. Saved you $ 300 on parts and labour
