This year of truck did have issues with rear disc brakes. Quality of pads is extremely critical. Go with the AC Delco pads and rotors to eleviate some of the issue. Make sure that the slide pins are liberally lubricated and move freely or drag will cause excessive heat to occur. Let me know if you need anything else.
i just bought a 2001 chevy silverado, and after driving it about 20 minutes to a friends house, i get out of the truck and smell the left rear brakes, i assumed the caliper was locked up so i went and replaced it and bled the lines, i then left my friends house and came back home to smell the rear passenger side now. what could be causing this?

Grind a little off the Ends of brake shoes so they slide back & forth easier. Not too much though or they’ll rattle. Make sure your calipers are good too.
How to remove a rear drum off a 2000 chevy 4wd 2500<br />
SOURCE: BRAKE LOCKING UP
It can be your pressure regulating combination valve!!! Follow the brake lines to a block on the frame under the master cylinder, remove and replace... Not as easy as it sounds.

Have someone push & release pedal while at wheel with problem. See if it takes a while or slow to release. If yes, have wrench ready on bleeder screw, and try again, if it sticks/holds, crack bleeder screw, if it releases, I'd replace hose.
