2001 Olds Silhouette: plenty of gas in the tank but the gage will read full, 3/4 full, 1/2 full, and everywhere in between. Van runs fine. No other issues except the gage goes crazy and can't depend on what it says.

This sounds like the fuelpump is bad, it may have been on its way out or when you ran out of gas it sucked up all the dirt at the bottom of the gas tank. it sounds like the pump cant produce the correct amout of pressure needed to keep the engine running. if you have a fuel pressure gauge you can test the pressure and know for sure its a bad fuelpump. you would connect the gauge to the valve on the fuel rail and then turn the ignition on and there should be 55psi of pressure. if the pressure is lower by more than 4psi or no pressure then replace the pump which is located inside the gas tank. i think you will find that the fuel pump is bad. good day. hope this is helpful.
In order to fix your gas gauge, you will need to remove the gas tank and either re-adjust or replace the fuel pump. In your van, the fuel pump and fuel sensor are the same unit.
This is moderately difficult. The hardest part is getting the fuel pump out of the tank without damaging any fuel lines or wiring. The procedure can take anywhere from 3 hours to 8 hours, depending on the tools you have available to do the job.
A hammer, long thick flat tipped screw driver and a socket wrench and set are a minimum for this job, though specialty tools made for your van can make the job easier and faster.
generally this happens because of a bad connection on the float itself. there is no fix for this because it is intergrated as part of the in tank pump. and if the fuel pump works fine. the cost of replacing the whole unit is not worth just fixing the float problem. as far as the the strip on the door i usually just call it a cosmetic door molding or flashing. good luck....please rate..thanks
The problem is usually one or the other. Both get 5 volts from the engine computer. If the problem is the gas gauge, you'll have to change the sender in the tank. Generally, an aftermarket pump/sender unit is $150-175. Get one and drop the tank to install. The temp gauge is another matter and it could be dirty coolant. If both are going nuts together, you'll need a new computer. Junk units are fine.
